The nuts and bolts of effective brochure design. The design bar is at an all-time high for those brave enough to participate in the industry. TodayÆs designers must be clear on all the steps necessary to create work that stands out in an increasingly competitive marketplace. Unfortunately, most design books only focus on type, color, and layout issues. The Design Matters series takes a more in-depth approach, allowing designers to learn not only how to create work that is aesthetically appealing, but also strategy-driven and smart. This book focuses on developing, creating and implementing brochure designs, while others in the series dissect packaging, logos, publications, and letterhead systems. Archival Basics for Historic Record Collections is an introduction to the concepts, policies, infrastructure and tasks needed to collect, preserve and make archival collections available to researchers. The book is based on content presented in workshops by the Council of State Archivists and presented in an on-line course by the American Association of State and Local History since 2003. Arp focuses on the discreet tasks necessary to manage archival collections. This is a practical, how-to book on managing archival collections designed for those who have responsibility for such collections but lack formal archival training. The book begins by defining historic records, archival collections and the differences between archives, libraries and museums while identifying the steps needed to manage archival collections. It then looks at collecting archival items including creating a collections policy, documenting the acquisition of archival items and the steps needed to bring those items into an archives. It discusses arranging, preserving and describing archival collections so researchers can find the information they seek. Next, it goes over what is needed to store, protect, and make archival collections available to researchers. The last chapters contemplates the policies, skills and infrastructure needed to successfully manage digital records and looks at creating digital copies of analog records to promote their use. The book provides templates, questionnaires and examples to enable the reader to create customized archival policies and procedures that accommodate the particular circumstances they find themselves in. The book also contains exercises and quizzes designed to reinforce the retention and understanding of critical concepts. In addition to examples it has lists of additional resources so those who want more detailed information on particular topics can find it. This book is not the only reference book needed by those doing archival work, but it should be the first book they need.

Words are everywhere in the museum. Amidst all the visual exhibits, and in many non-exhibition areas, swarm a host of words, talking to a vast swath of people in ways that visuals cannot. Signage at the information desk, brochures, exhibition videos, guided tours, membership materials, apps, and store labels: in a multi-screen world, where information explodes in every corner of the field of vision, clarity comes from the presence of words among the feast of visuals, helping contemporary audiences feel at home. Research bears out the need for a range of learning tools and it’s not just visitors who benefit from verbal cues; donors, educators, community partners, and volunteers will all engage more effectively with the museum that explains its brand mission with good writing. Whether written by administrators, staffers, freelancers, or interns, words are delivered by people in your museums with the knowledge that they will be interpreted by strangers. Your story is told everywhere, and with each narration it reinforces your brand; hopefully every single word reflects your brand. Each chapter tells how to put into words the stories you need to tell including: Blogs Brochures Exhibition videos Guided tour scripts Collateral programming talks Marketing plans Proposals to community partners Public Relations releases Social Media Solicitation letters Surveys Volunteer communications Website If you ever wished for a good writer, right on staff, ready to take on project, major or routine, here’s the help you’re looking for.
