Recent advances in both the theory and implementation of computational algebraic geometry have led to new, striking applications to a variety of fields of research. The articles in this volume highlight a range of these applications and provide introductory material for topics covered in the IMA workshops on "Optimization and Control" and "Applications in Biology, Dynamics, and Statistics" held during the IMA year on Applications of Algebraic Geometry. The articles related to optimization and control focus on burgeoning use of semidefinite programming and moment matrix techniques in computational real algebraic geometry. The new direction towards a systematic study of non-commutative real algebraic geometry is well represented in the volume. Other articles provide an overview of the way computational algebra is useful for analysis of contingency tables, reconstruction of phylogenetic trees, and in systems biology. The contributions collected in this volume are accessible to non-experts, self-contained and informative; they quickly move towards cutting edge research in these areas, and provide a wealth of open problems for future research.

Using a progressive but flexible format, this book contains a series of independent chapters that show how the principles and theory of real analysis can be applied in a variety of settings-in subjects ranging from Fourier series and polynomial approximation to discrete dynamical systems and nonlinear optimization. Users will be prepared for more intensive work in each topic through these applications and their accompanying exercises. Chapter topics under the abstract analysis heading include: the real numbers, series, the topology of R^n, functions, normed vector spaces, differentiation and integration, and limits of functions. Applications cover approximation by polynomials, discrete dynamical systems, differential equations, Fourier series and physics, Fourier series and approximation, wavelets, and convexity and optimization. For math enthusiasts with a prior knowledge of both calculus and linear algebra.

This book gathers twenty-two papers presented at the second NLAGA-BIRS Symposium, which was held at Cap Skirring and at the Assane Seck University in Ziguinchor, Senegal, on January 25–30, 2022. The five-day symposium brought together African experts on nonlinear analysis and geometry and their applications, as well as their international partners, to present and discuss mathematical results in various areas. The main goal of the NLAGA project is to advance and consolidate the development of these mathematical fields in West and Central Africa with a focus on solving real-world problems such as coastal erosion, pollution, and urban network and population dynamics problems. The book addresses a range of topics related to partial differential equations, geometric analysis, geometric structures, dynamics, optimization, inverse problems, complex analysis, algebra, algebraic geometry, control theory, stochastic approximations, and modelling.

In the last decade there has been an extraordinary confluence of ideas in mathematics and theoretical physics brought about by pioneering discoveries in geometry and analysis. The various chapters in this volume, treating the interface of geometric analysis and mathematical physics, represent current research interests. No suitable succinct account of the material is available elsewhere. Key topics include: * A self-contained derivation of the partition function of Chern- Simons gauge theory in the semiclassical approximation (D.H. Adams) * Algebraic and geometric aspects of the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equations in conformal field theory (P. Bouwknegt) * Application of the representation theory of loop groups to simple models in quantum field theory and to certain integrable systems (A.L. Carey and E. Langmann) * A study of variational methods in Hermitian geometry from the viewpoint of the critical points of action functionals together with physical backgrounds (A. Harris) * A review of monopoles in nonabelian gauge theories (M.K. Murray) * Exciting developments in quantum cohomology (Y. Ruan) * The physics origin of Seiberg-Witten equations in 4-manifold theory (S. Wu) Graduate students, mathematicians and mathematical physicists in the above-mentioned areas will benefit from the user-friendly introductory style of each chapter as well as the comprehensive bibliographies provided for each topic. Prerequisite knowledge is minimal since sufficient background material motivates each chapter.

Functional analysis owes its OrIgms to the discovery of certain striking analogies between apparently distinct disciplines of mathematics such as analysis, algebra, and geometry. At the turn of the nineteenth century, a number of observations, made sporadically over the preceding years, began to inspire systematic investigations into the common features of these three disciplines, which have developed rather independently of each other for so long. It was found that many concepts of this triad-analysis, algebra, geometry-could be incorporated into a single, but considerably more abstract, new discipline which came to be called functional analysis. In this way, many aspects of analysis and algebra acquired unexpected and pro found geometric meaning, while geometric methods inspired new lines of approach in analysis and algebra. A first significant step toward the unification and generalization of algebra, analysis, and geometry was taken by Hilbert in 1906, who studied the collection, later called 1 , composed of infinite sequences x = Xb X 2, ... , 2 X , ... , of numbers satisfying the condition that the sum Ik"= 1 X 2 converges. k k The collection 12 became a prototype of the class of collections known today as Hilbert spaces.

Geometrical concepts play a significant role in the analysis of physical systems. Apart from the intrinsic interest, the knowledge of differentiable manifolds has become useful ? even mandatory ? in an ever-increasing number of areas of mathematics and its applications. Many results/concepts in analysis find their most natural (generalized) setting in manifold theory. An interrelation of geometry and analysis can be found in this volume. The book presents original research, besides a few survey articles by eminent experts from all over the world on current trends of research in differential and algebraic geometry, classical and modern analysis including the theory of distributions (linear and nonlinear), partial differential equations and wavelets.
