Excerpt from Agricultural Trade Highlights, Vol. 10: October 1991 Feed grains exports, at $493 million, were down 11 percent from last August on 5 percent lower volume. Exports to the USSR rebounded to $77 million, up from zero last August, thereby preventing a more serious decline. However, exports were off to Korea (down $82 mil lion), Canada (down $14 million), Is rael (down $12 million), and Japan (down $25 million). Year-to-date ex ports reached billion and million tons, down 37 percent in value and 27 percent in volume. Slow and sporadic exports to the USSR and Eastern Europe, due to political and economic events, accounted for half of the decline. Also, increased exports of competitively priced corn by China have hurt us. Exports to Asia, especially Korea. Increased exports of frozen french fries, canned tomato products and canned corn continue to dominate this consumer food commodity grouping. Tree nut exports in 1995 to date are up a modest 2 percent at $903 million. Export volume for shelled almonds and unit prices for inshell walnuts are both up significantly. Export sales of these tree nuts have been particularly strong to Spain. In fiscal 1993, sales are up 9 percent to billion and volume is up 12 percent to million tons. Exports of soybeans and products, the largest category, are up 10 percent to billion on a 12-percent gain in vol ume. Lower competing soybean sup plies from South America are boosting sales to the EC (up 23 percent to billion), and other major overseas mar kets, including Japan (up 13 percent to $573 million), Taiwan (up 12 percent to $292 million), and South Korea (up 15 percent to $187 million).
