This book describes algorithmic methods and hardware implementations that aim to help realize the promise of Compressed Sensing (CS), namely the ability to reconstruct high-dimensional signals from a properly chosen low-dimensional “portrait”. The authors describe a design flow and some low-resource physical realizations of sensing systems based on CS. They highlight the pros and cons of several design choices from a pragmatic point of view, and show how a lightweight and mild but effective form of adaptation to the target signals can be the key to consistent resource saving. The basic principle of the devised design flow can be applied to almost any CS-based sensing system, including analog-to-information converters, and has been proven to fit an extremely diverse set of applications. Many practical aspects required to put a CS-based sensing system to work are also addressed, including saturation, quantization, and leakage phenomena.

Compressed sensing is recently developed theory which focuses on reconstructing a signal by finding solutions to set of linear equations which is an under determined system. Applications which involve huge data to be transmitted over wireless radio is often limited by the power consumed by radio. It is highly recommended to send lesser number of samples and recover back the original signal with minimal error. Compressed sensing (CS) is one such theory which recovers back the original signal with fewer non adaptive extracted measurements. CS provides a novel approach to sample signals below Nyquist rate with limited information loss. The main focus of this thesis is to develop an architecture which compresses the data at encoder using Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT), sample the data using +-1 random Bernoulli matrix and recover back the original signal at the decoder using a greedy algorithm called Orthogonal Matching Pursuit (OMP). We modeled our architectures both on Floating and Fixed Point representations using custom developed library of numerical operations in Matlab. The entire chain of CS architecture is tested using the neural data and several graphs are plotted and analysed. Finally The CS Encoder and Decoder hardware structures are implemented on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) and performance of the same is evaluated in terms of mean squared error (MSE) and signal to noise distortion ratio (SNDR) metrics.

Compressed sensing (CS) is a promising method for recovering sparse signals from fewer measurements than ordinarily used in the Shannon's sampling theorem [14]. Introducing the CS theory has sparked interest in designing new hardware architectures which can be potential substitutions for traditional architectures in communication systems. CS-based wireless sensors and analog-to-information converters (AIC) are two examples of CS-based systems. It has been claimed that such systems can potentially provide higher performance and lower power consumption compared to traditional systems. However, since there is no end-to-end hardware implementation of these systems, it is difficult to make a fair hardware-to-hardware comparison with other implemented systems. This project aims to fill this gap by examining the energy-performance design space for CS in the context of both practical wireless sensors and AICs. One of the limitations of CS-based systems is that they employ iterative algorithms to recover the signal. Since these algorithms are slow, the hardware solution has become crucial for higher performance and speed. In this work, we also implement a suitable CS reconstruction algorithm in hardware.
