A Hybrid Approach to Teaching Chinese through Digital Humanities, CALL, and Project-Based Learning presents an exposition of current thinking, research, and best practices in Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL), Digital Humanities (DH), and Project-Based Language Learning (PBLL) in the context of teaching Chinese as a foreign language (TCFL). It proposes integrating CALL and DH into PBLL to form a Digital Humanities–Augmented Technology-Enhanced Project-Based Language Learning (DATEPBLL) approach to transform student learning. By combining DH pedagogy and CALL technology with PBLL, the approach takes advantage of their synergies, which enables instructors to help students develop linguistic and cultural competency as well as 21st century skills. Case studies and best practices from experienced Chinese language teachers are presented to demonstrate the value of the DATEPBLL approach. This is the first volume that covers all three fields and makes a strong case for the importance of incorporating CALL, DH, and PBLL for effective language learning. This book is based on educational research conducted by the Confucius Institute for Innovation and Learning at Aalborg University. It aims to bridge the gap between the traditional methods of teaching Chinese and the student-centred learning method in a non-native context such as Denmark. The establishment of a conceptual framework for Task-Based PBL offers an alternative approach that encourages innovative teaching practices and promotes research-based teaching in language education. Empirically, this book reports how teachers designed and conducted tasks, how the classroom setting was affected, and how students evaluated the course. Teachers’ reflections and recommendations are included, along with 20 ready-to-use tasks developed by our teachers to disseminate our experiences and methods with a broad range of teachers, students and educational contexts. This book suggests that the effectiveness of new teaching methods and the initiation of new subjects are contextual. Learning a foreign language (e.g. Chinese) is more than language acquisition; it is also understanding other cultures and participating in intercultural interaction and communication. Thus, education and learning (particularly a foreign language) is related to a broader social transformation in the process of globalisation and in the development towards a knowledge society.

Teaching and Researching Chinese Second Language Listening focuses on Chinese L2 listening with theory and pedagogy at its heart. The objectives of the book are to recount the development of Chinese L2 listening pedagogy, to synthesize research on Chinese L2 listening, and to propose a Chinese L2 listening approach. This book is the first to bridge the gap between Chinese L2 and general L2 listening and develop a much-needed systematic teaching approach to Chinese listening based on research findings in L2 listening, the unique features of the Chinese language, and the distinctive characteristics of the Chinese L2 learner population. This book grounds Chinese L2 teaching in solid theories of L2 acquisition and teaching. The research-informed and evidence-based Chinese L2 teaching approach proposed in the book seeks to move beyond the traditional product-oriented approach to integrate form-, meaning-, process-, and learner-focused listening. This book also discusses Chinese L2 listening from learners’ perspectives: heritage versus non-heritage learners and motivation. These are presented together with theory and teaching practice. The book is aimed at researchers, in-service teachers and students taking upper-level undergraduate courses and postgraduate courses for programs in Chinese applied linguistics and teaching Chinese as a second language (TCSL). Chinese listening studies to date have mostly been published in the Chinese language, which severely limits their readership. This book is therefore written in English to fill the gap in current scholarship. Due to a large number of Chinese learners and the consequential booming programs in TCSL and CIE (Chinese international education), it is important to dedicate a book specifically to Chinese listening.

The COVID-19 pandemic created a ripple effect that impacted education worldwide, felt from Pre-K through higher education. In response to the pandemic, teachers, parents, and students shifted to teaching and learning online to adjust to the affordances found in digital spaces. However, challenges quickly arose, and it was found that research was sorely needed on adapting learning to these digital spaces, including addressing issues with equitable access to technological tools, meeting the social emotional needs of all learners, and developing appropriate teaching strategies for young children in online spaces. Situating our understanding of emerging research in this area of remote teaching and learning in Pre-K through higher education is critical as we look to build upon evidence-based practices to better support 21st-century educators and learners. Cases on Practical Applications for Remote, Hybrid, and Hyflex Teaching presents emerging case studies on the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and reports and responds to early evidence of these impacts and the predicted future impacts for students, families, teachers, policymakers, and higher education. Building on knowledge of how teaching and learning in digital spaces work, the literature presented in this book captures preliminary findings and emerging research examining how educators leverage teaching and learning across platforms and modalities and shares stories on how educators, families, and communities responded to the challenges of teaching and learning online to ensure all students were engaged and fully supported while learning remotely and as they transitioned back to the classroom.
