C. Deafness may arise from extravasation of blood in the cavity of the drum - This lesion is usually the result of external injury, Of vio lent attacks of sneezing, or of constriction of the neck; but it is chiefly caused by the first of these. In cases of this kind, Sir A. Cooper advised perforation of the membrane; but the extravasated fluid will either pass Off by the Eustachian tube, or be absorbed. Moreover, the deafness and other unfavourable symptoms existing in these cases are not so much de pendant upon the extravasation in the cavity of the ear as upon the injury other parts of the organ, or even the brain and its membranes, may have sustained. When, however, blood is effused in the drum, inflammatory action not infrequently supervenes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
