The NATO Advanced Study Institute "Cosmological Aspects of X-Ray Clus ters of Galaxies" took place in Vel en , Westphalia, Germany, from June 6 to June 18, 1993. It addressed the fruitful union of two topics, cosmology and X-ray clus ters, both of which carry substantial scientific weight at the beginning of the last decenium of the last century in the second millenium of our era. The so far largest X-ray "All-Sky Survey", observed by the ROSAT X-ray satel lite, and ROSAT's deep pointed observations, have considerably enlarged the base of X-ray astronomy, particularly concerning extragalactic sources. Cosmology has gained significant impetus from the large optical direct and spectroscopic surveys, based on high quality 2-dimensional receivers at large telescopes and powerful scan ning devices, harvesting the full information 1 content from the older technique of employing photographic plates. Radioastronomy and IR-astronomy with IRAS, as well as r-astronomy with GRO, continue and strengthen the role of extragalactic research. The rapidly growing computer power in data reduction and data storage facilities support the evolution towards large-number statistics. A most significant push was given to early cosmology by the needs of physics in trying to unravel the nature of forces which govern our material world. The topic of the ASI was chosen because it opens new vistas on this for ever new problem: the universe. Clusters of galaxies probe large-scale matter distributions and the structure of space-time.

This book uses new data from the very low radio frequency telescope LOFAR to analyse the magnetic structure in the giant radio galaxy NGC6251. This analysis reveals that the magnetic field strength in the locality of this giant radio galaxy is an order of magnitude lower than in other comparable systems. Due to the observational limitations associated with capturing such huge astrophysical structures, giant radio galaxies are historically a poorly sampled population of objects; however, their preferential placement in the more rarefied regions of the cosmic web makes them a uniquely important probe of large-scale structures. In particular, the polarisation of the radio emissions from giant radio galaxies is one of the few tools available to us that can be used to measure magnetic fields in regions where the strength of those fields is a key differentiator for competing models of the origin of cosmic magnetism. Low frequency polarisation data are crucial for detailed analyses of magnetic structure, but they are also the most challenging type of observational data to work with. This book presents a beautifully coupled description of the technical and scientific analysis required to extract valuable information from such data and, as the new generation of low frequency radio telescopes reveals the larger population of giant radio galaxies, it offers a significant resource for future analyses.

The mass distributions were determined of several clusters of galaxies by using X ray surface brightness data from the Einstein Observatory Imaging Proportional Counter (IPC). Determining cluster mass distributions is important for constraining the nature of the dark matter which dominates the mass of galaxies, galaxy clusters, and the Universe. Galaxy clusters are permeated with hot gas in hydrostatic equilibrium with the gravitational potentials of the clusters. Cluster mass distributions can be determined from x ray observations of cluster gas by using the equation of hydrostatic equilibrium and knowledge of the density and temperature structure of the gas. The x ray surface brightness at some distance from the cluster is the result of the volume x ray emissivity being integrated along the line of sight in the cluster. In this thesis, we have explored what information may be gleaned from X-ray observations of galaxies in dense environments. We use X-ray observations from XMM- Newton and the Chandra X-ray Observatory, and multi-wavelength ancillary data, to investigate the X-ray emission of galaxies. First, we study the distribution and properties of the intragroup diffuse X-ray emission in compact groups (CGs) of galaxies. From a sample of 19 CGs, we find the morphology of hot gas in low-mass groups is varied, and most systems have hot gas (if any) associated with only individual members. The galaxy-linked hot gas is coupled with high star formation rates (SFRs), while only CGs with high baryonic masses have substantial hot gas linked to the group environment. It is high-mass CGs that also agree well with the observed scaling relations between diffuse X-ray luminosity (LX), gas temperature, and velocity dispersion predicted and observed in galaxy clusters, indicating that the hot gas in only massive CGs is virialized. We also investigate the relations between LX, SFR, and stellar mass from individual members of CGs and the infall region of the nearby Coma galaxy cluster, which is the only environment that has a mid-infrared galaxy color distribution similar to CGs. The Coma galaxies agree with the scaling relations between LX, SFR, and stellar mass from the literature within uncertainties, while the CG members often show an X-ray excess. We also used our multi-wavelength observations to identify active galaxies in the Coma infall sample and find that the fraction of active galaxies is similar to the CG environment. From our observations of the diffuse X-ray emission in CGs, we find it unlikely that the intragroup hot gas is responsible for the rapid transformation of galaxies from star-forming to quiescent. While the fraction of nuclear activity in Coma infall and CG galaxies is similar, which may reflect the influence of multi-galaxy gravitational interactions, the X-ray emission from individual galaxies in the two environments is also markedly different.
