Excerpt from Miscellaneous Poems Such of the public as may favour me with a perusal of these trifles should be informed that they are not the laboured efforts of a well-cultured mind, learned in the wisdom of the schools, and possessing all the appliances for careful study, but the productions of a farm labourer, in the few scattered hours of leisure snatched from a toilsome occupation; therefore I hope the critical eye will scan their imperfections charitably, and, where merit is discovered, that his approbation may not be withheld.
