Excerpt from The Wife of Columbus: With Genealogical Tree of the Perestrello and Moniz Families About a year ago the American Register, of which we were for many years the Spanish and Portuguese correspondent, copied a paragraph from the Inter-Ocean to the effect that while tons upon tons of paper had been and were being used to glorify Columbus, nobody thought of employing a single sheet for the purpose of telling the world something about Columbus' wife. That paragraph attracted our serious attention. We felt sure it must have been penned by a woman. Here were we, right at the fountain-head, with exceptional facilities for gathering data about that wife - we being not only a Portuguese journalist, but also a friend of descendants of her father's family, the Perestrellos, now living in Lisbon. Why shouldn't we undertake to find out something about this Portuguese woman and the influence she might have exercised upon the great navigator? We immediately set about this congenial task, beginning with the pedigree of the Perestrello family. With that pedigree our difficulties began. Dates and names would not agree, yet it seemed impossible that the very Perestrello family should be in error concerning their ancestors! Our first step had, of course, been to apply to our friend Senhora Donna Eugenia de Souza and her husband, Senhor Sebastian de Perestrello, for all the information they possessed. Most courteously did they give it, but oh! it had never occurred to them to compare and analyze; with the easy acquiescence characteristic of these latitudes, they had taken all the family traditions for granted! Paula DiPerna’s first novel combines historical and scientific fact with a fictional, behind-the-scenes look at what might have been had there been a woman on Columbus’s voyages. Christopher Columbus’s wife, Felipa Moniz Perestrello, died in approximately 1484. If she had lived, this would be the diary she might have kept while traveling with her husband to the New World. The novel portrays Felipa as a jealous, passionate, and adventurous woman. DiPerna has come up with a great idea, and, despite a slow start, her narrative proves well written and engrossing. The author, a previous vice president of the Cousteau Society, is a seasoned traveler and well qualified to write about adventure and exploration. Recommended for most collections, especially women’s studies collections

Discover never-before-told details of POW underground operations during the Vietnam War told through one airman's inspiring story of true love, honor, and courage. Air Force pilot Captain Carlyle "Smitty" Harris was shot down over Vietnam on April 4, 1965 and taken to the infamous Hoa Lo prison--nicknamed the "Hanoi Hilton." For the next eight years, Smitty and hundreds of other American POWs--including John McCain and George "Bud" Day--suffered torture, solitary confinement, and unimaginable abuse. It was there that Smitty covertly taught many other POWs the Tap Code--an old, long-unused method of communication from World War II. Using the code, they could softly tap messages of encouragement to lonely neighbors and pass along resistance policies from their leaders. The code quickly became a lifeline during their internment. It helped the prisoners boost morale, stay unified, communicate the chain of command, and prevail over a brutal enemy. Meanwhile, back home in the United States, Harris's wife, Louise, raised their three children alone, unsure of her husband's fate for seven long years. One of the first POW wives of the Vietnam War, she became a role model for other military wives by advocating for herself and her children in her husband's absence. Told through both Smitty's and Louise's voices, Tap Code shares the riveting true story of: Ingenuity under pressure Strength and dignity in the face of a frightening enemy The hope, faith, and resolve necessary to endure even the darkest circumstances Praise for Tap Code: "Tap Code is an incredible story about two American heroes. Col. "Smitty" Harris and his wife, Louise, epitomize the definition of commitment--to God, to country, and to family. This tale of extreme perseverance will restore your faith in the human spirit." --Brigadier General John Nichols, USAF "The incomprehensibly long ordeal of the Harris family is agonizing. Their love, faith, loyalty, and courage epitomize all that is good about America." --Lt. Col. Orson Swindle, USMC (ret.), POW, Hanoi, 11/11/1966 to 3/4/1973
