The WHO technical specifications for neonatal resuscitation devices were developed based on existing international standards evidence-based publications from reliable sources and field expert experience. For equipment without prior technical specifications recommendations were made based on a literature research depending on quality and significance of evidence. The purpose of WHO technical specifications for Neonatal resuscitation devices: is to provide a minimum standard baseline to meet the increasing demand to procure good quality affordable accessible and appropriate neonatal resuscitation devices. The specifications are intended to support policy-makers managers procurement officers manufacturers regulators and nongovernmental agencies especially in low- and middle-income countries to select procure use reprocess and decommission appropriate neonatal resuscitation equipment. The end goal is to save the children particularly in low-resource settings.

The United Nations Commission on Life-Saving Commodities (UNCLSC, 2012) defined 13 health products to end preventable deaths of woman and children. One of those 13 products is the neonatal resuscitator, is indispensable medical device to save newborns from asphyxia at birth. For the efficient use of neonatal resuscitation, training of healthcare professionals using neonatal resuscitation manikins is the most effective approach. Critical lifesaving trainings calls for the need of neonatal resuscitation manikins with the right features. The purpose of the WHO neonatal resuscitation manikin: technical specifications is to provide a minimum standard baseline to meet the increasing demand to procure good quality, affordable, accessible, and appropriate neonatal resuscitation manikins. Towards the development of this baseline, this document includes compilation of available scientific evidence from technical literature, international publications, expert reviews, and an industry survey which was conducted by WHO medical devices team.

Access to appropriate, affordable, effective, and safe health technologies is paramount, especially in low-resource settings, where burden of non-communicable diseases adds on to the infectious diseases. NCDs account for a staggering 74% of global deaths, with 86% of premature fatalities occurring in resource-constrained regions. Cardiovascular diseases, cancers, chronic respiratory conditions, and diabetes collectively contribute to over 80% of these premature NCD-related deaths. Addressing this challenge requires targeted interventions and innovative solutions tailored to LMICs. The 2024 Compendium of Innovative Health Technologies for low-resource settings includes commercially available solutions and prototypes. This 7th edition showcases 21 technologies, each with a full assessment. It also includes updates for technologies previously featured in previous compendia editions. Assessments include clinical aspects, relation to WHO technical specifications, regulatory compliance, criteria on health technology assessment and health technology management, local production viability, and intellectual property considerations. Beyond presenting these innovations, the Compendium serves as a catalyst for increased interaction among stakeholders—ministries of health, procurement officers, donors, developers, biomedical engineers, clinicians, and users. By providing evidence-based assessments and relevant information, it aims to drive use of innovative health technology and expand global access, particularly for low-resource settings for populations in need.

The healthcare industry is always looking for innovative ways to use technology in order to improve the experiences of their professionals and their patients. The improvements are welcomed in a variety of areas, from analyzing relevant health data to establishing new ways of delivering medical education and training. With advancements in head-worn display technology such as the Microsoft Hololens, we must look into the feasibility of leveraging the technology to aid us in the ongoing challenge of creating these meaningful and educational experiences. In this thesis, the bag and mask step in the Neonatal Resuscitation training is investigated. The bag and mask step is required to provide assisted ventilation through a face-mask. We evaluate the efficiency and performance of using data from devices such as a Phidget sensor for air pressure data and immersive technology such as the Microsoft Hololens to help provide users with useful feedback. Two studies were conducted to evaluate the potential of these technologies as well as the most effective method of delivering the feedback. Between four different stimuli: visual, audio, a combination of visual and audio, and the transition from visual and audio to audio-only, it was found that the visual stimuli resulted in the best performance in the timing of the bag compressions in both our studies with laypeople and medical professionals. Based on the results of the study, we also express the importance of having a proper seal between the mask and the baby in order to achieve the appropriate pressure during manual ventilation.
