Herman Melville's Bartleby, asked to account for himself, "would prefer not to." Tongue-tied Billy Budd, urged to defend his innocence, responds with a murderous blow. The Bavard, by Louis-René des Forêts, concerns a man whose power to speak is replaced by an inability to shut up. In these and other literary examples a call for speech throws the possibility of speaking into doubt. What Is There to Say? uses the ideas of Maurice Blanchot to clarify puzzling works by Melville, des Forêts, and Beckett. Ann Smock's energetic readings of texts about talking, listening, and recording cast an equally welcome light on Blanchot's paradoxical thought. Ann Smock is a professor of French at the University of California, Berkeley and the author of Double Dealing. She translated Maurice Blanchot's The Space of Literature and The Writing of the Disaster, as well as Sarah Kofman's Rue Ordener, Rue Labat, all published by the University of Nebraska Press.

Although we may not think we notice them, storefronts and their signage are meaningful, and the impact they have on people is significant. What the Signs Say argues that the public language of storefronts is a key component to the creation of the place known as Brooklyn, New York. Using a sample of more than two thousand storefronts and over a decade of ethnographic observation and interviews, the study charts two very different types of local Brooklyn retail signage. The unique and consistent features of many words, large lettering, and repetition that make up Old School signage both mark and produce an inclusive and open place. In contrast, the linguistic elements of New School signage, such as brevity and wordplay, signal not only the arrival of gentrification, but also the remaking of Brooklyn as distinctive and exclusive. Shonna Trinch and Edward Snajdr, a sociolinguist and an anthropologist respectively, show how the beliefs and ideas that people take as truths about language and its speakers are deployed in these different sign types. They also present in-depth ethnographic case studies that reveal how gentrification and corporate redevelopment in Brooklyn are intimately connected to public communication, literacy practices, the transformation of motherhood and gender roles, notions of historical preservation, urban planning, and systems of privilege. Far from peripheral or irrelevant, shop signs say loud and clear that language displayed in public always matters.

The Sanctuary or Church of Christ Jesus is our hospital and another throne we come to for dumping our hurts and renewing of our minds. As we come in and as we go out, if we believe the Word of God, we should be excited about what the Word of God reveals about who we are in Him. We should leave Church stronger than before because of what we have been taught, andbelieve Gods Holy message being explained to us. We have to examine the Word of God to know the truth is being taught. (1 John 2:13, 5:4, KJV ref only) Our Pastors should not have to plead for a response to the anointed Word of God during service. I hear pastors/teachers/ministers saying, Come on somebody? Can I get the Church to say amen? Are you all getting the message? Are you all awake? It is dishonorable not to respond with praise to the awesome Word of God. (Hebrews 13:15-17, AMPC ref only) Did you know were doxological? Meaningwe were made to worship the Lord of lords, who is the King of kings, Jesus our Savior, with our expressions in songs, hymns, praises and our lifestyles! We have so many reasons to praise God, and to be thankful as Christ believers. (Isaiah 56:7, AMPC ref only) PRAISE THE LORD! Sing to the Lord a new song, praise Him in the assembly of His saints! Let the high praises of God be in their throats and a two-edged sword in their hands (Psalm 149:1, 6, AMPC)
