Wetlands Management In Cambodia

This booklet contains the introduction to the volume and executive summaries of each of the five chapters. The full volume can be viewed and printed in its entirety or as separate chapters from the accompanying CD-ROM.

In terms of wetlands, Cambodia is one of the most important countries in the Asian region with over 20% of the country's area consisting of natural wetlands and 10% of rice fields. The Kingdom of Cambodia is historically, culturally and economically closely bound up with wetlands, which play a central role in the production of food and other products. Cambodia's wetlands are also important for global biodiversity. Following the elections in 1993 the Cambodian Government has established a number of initiatives towards the management of Cambodia's wetlands. This paper describes these initiatives, in particular, the development of a National Wetland Action Plan for Cambodia. [Authors' abstract].

Under FAO initiative on eco-friendly water management for sustainable wetland agriculture, the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), as the service provider, prepared the Study Report on Wetland Agriculture and Water Management in Mekong Region study report on wetland agriculture and water management in the Mekong Region for further program formulation. The overall objective is to review the current water management in relation to agriculture and identify the good practices and experiences of water management as a win-win solution for agriculture production and wetland conservation and recommend program formulation on eco-friendly water management for sustainable wetland agriculture. The expected outcome of the overall initiative is sustainable use of wetland to stress both productive and ecological functions of agriculture. The outputs aim to provide the solution as a win-win strategy for wetland and agriculture through eco-friendly water management, which will contribute to the ecological health, function and integrity of the Mekong Wetland Agriculture Ecosystem. Country consultation workshops were conducted for Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam to increase awareness on the issues of sustainable wetland management, and identify the threats, gaps and needs, priorities, and way forward towards sustainable use of wetlands in the Mekong Region.

The Cranes are among the most ancient and distinctive families of birds on Earth, yet they are among the world's most threatened groups of birds. This Action Plan describes the many different sorts of threats facing cranes, especially as they migrate through different countries, and the many solutions that have been attempted to overcome them. It is intended for all those involved in crane conservation, including conservation biologists; conservation organizations, other non-governmental organizations, inter-national development agencies; political, civic, and business leaders; funding agencies and foundations; educators; and members of the general public.

ÿDuring the rollout of CGIAR Research Program on Aquatic Agricultural Systems (AAS) in Tonle Sap in 2013, water management was highlighted as one of the key development challenges. With limited capacity to regulate water, the situation oscillates between too much water in the wet season and too little water in the dry season. Access to and availability of water were seen by local communities as major limitations for aquatic and agricultural production, impacting on functions that include the lake fishery, intensive (dry season) rice crops, recession rice, rainfed rice and floating rice by the lakeside. For both fish and rice production, water and water management are determined principally by the natural flooding of the Tonle Sap Lake. This study is based on a community survey on water access, availability and management and was conceived out of the AAS consultation process and was developed to help identify existing practices in water use and management, as well as best practices where lessons can be learned and promising activities scaled out to other communities. The community survey also aims to understand, identify and analyze constraints and opportunities related to water, and includes a gender perspective to better understand the role of women in water management and use.

As they provide a negotiating space for a diversity of interests, Multi-Stakeholder Platforms (MSPs) are an increasingly popular mode of involving civil society in resource management decisions. This book focuses on water management to take a positive, if critical, look at this phenomenon. Illustrated by a wide geographical range of case studies from both developed and developing worlds, it recognizes that MSPs will neither automatically break down divides nor bring actors to the table on an equal footing, and argues that MSPs may in some cases do more harm than good. The volume then examines how MSPs can make a difference and how they might successfully co-opt the public, private and civil-society sectors. The book highlights the particular difficulties of MSPs when dealing with integrated water management programmes, explaining how MSPs are most successful at a less complex and more local level. It finally questions whether MSPs are – or can be – sustainable, and puts forward suggestions for improving their durability.
