Web engineering is a new discipline that addresses the pressing need for syst- atic and tool-supported approaches for the development, maintenance and te- ing of Web applications. Web engineering builds upon well-known and succe- ful software engineering principles and practices, adapting them to the special characteristics of Web applications. Even more relevant is the enrichment with methods and techniques stemming from related areas like hypertext authoring, human-computer interaction, content management, and usability engineering. The goal of the 4th International Conference on Web Engineering (ICWE 2004), inlinewiththepreviousICWEconferences,wastoworktowardsabetterund- standing of the issues related to Web application development. Special attention was paid to emerging trends, technologies and future visions, to help the a- demic and industrial communities identify the most challenging tasks for their research and projects. Following a number of successful workshops on Web engineering since 1997 at well-known conferences, such as ICSE and WWW, the ?rst conference on Web engineering was held in C ́ aceres, Spain in 2001. It was followed by ICWE 2002 in Santa Fe, Argentina and ICWE 2003 in Oviedo, Spain. In 2004 ICWE moved to the center of Europe and was held in Munich, Germany from July 26 to 30. ICWE 2004 was organized by the Institute for Informatics of the Ludwig- Maximilians-Universit ̈ at (LMU) Munich. The ICWE 2004 edition received a total of 204 submissions, out of which 25 paperswereselectedbytheProgramCommitteeasfullpapers(12%acceptance).

Over the last few years Web Engineering has begun to gain mainstream acc- tance within the software engineering, IT and related disciplines. In particular, both researchers and practitioners are increasingly recognizing the unique c- racteristics of Web systems, and what these characteristicsimply in terms of the approaches we take to Web systems development and deployment in practice. A scan of the publications in related conference proceedings and journals highlights the diversity of the discipline areas which contribute to both the ri- ness and the complexity of Web Engineering. The 5th International Conference on Web Engineering (ICWE2005), held in Sydney, Australia, extends the traditions established by the earlier conferences in the series: ICWE2004 in Munich, Germany; ICWE2003 in Oviedo, Spain; ICWE2002 in Santa Fe, Argentina; and ICWE2001 in Caceres, ́ Spain. Not only have these conferences helped disseminate cutting edge research within the ?eld of Web Engineering, but they have also helped de?ne and shape the discipline itself.TheprogramwehaveputtogetherforICWE2005continuesthisevolution. Indeed, we can now begin to see the maturing of the ?eld. For possibly the ?rst time, there was very little debate within the Program Committee about which papers were in and out of scope, and much more debate as to the each papers contributions to the ?eld.

Nowadays, Web applications are almost omnipresent. The Web has become a platform not only for information delivery, but also for eCommerce systems, social networks, mobile services, and distributed learning environments. Engineering Web applications involves many intrinsic challenges due to their distributed nature, content orientation, and the requirement to make them available to a wide spectrum of users who are unknown in advance. The authors discuss these challenges in the context of well-established engineering processes, covering the whole product lifecycle from requirements engineering through design and implementation to deployment and maintenance. They stress the importance of models in Web application development, and they compare well-known Web-specific development processes like WebML, WSDM and OOHDM to traditional software development approaches like the waterfall model and the spiral model. .

The refereed proceedings of the International Conference on Web Engineering, ICWE 2003, held in Oviedo, Spain in July 2003. The 25 revised full papers and 73 short papers presented together with 2 invited papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 190 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on agents on the Web, e-commerce, e-learning, human-computer interaction, languages and tools, mobility and the Web, multimedia techniques and telecommunications, security, Web quality and testing, semantic Web, and Web applications development.
