Unlocking Indonesias Geothermal Potential

Geothermal energy represents one of the key options for Indonesia to achieve a comprehensive approach to national energy development. The rapid increase in fossil-fuel based energy consumption, which is subject to volatility in the world oil market, is the main challenge facing the country's energy supply. This study documents key issues that have constrained the development of geothermal power in Indonesia, including tariffs, tendering processes, financial considerations, permitting, and interagency coordination. It also makes recommendations to unlock the potential of the sector, including a new tariff regime, improvements to the tendering process, renegotiation of power purchase agreements, and innovative modes of financing.

The lack of academic references on geothermal law is my primary motivation to write this book to provide insight for the academic world, lecturers, students, activists, government officials and the public interested in energy issues, particularly geothermal. This book will provide comprehensive references in geothermal law and policy, including a global perspective of energy, geothermal potential in Indonesia, borderless concept of geothermal management, challenges in geothermal utilisation in the country, and a comparative perspective of geothermal utilisation in New Zealand. It also highlighted reformulation geothermal legal formation.

COVID-19 has disrupted all aspects of human life. To mitigate the impact of the pandemic, several efforts have been taken, including by Indonesian scholars abroad. This book entitled Indonesia Post-Pandemic Recovery Outlook: Strategy towards Net-Zero Emissions by 2060 from the Renewables and Carbon-Neutral Energy Perspectives explores energy sustainability and climate change issues and how it can progress further. There are also discussion on the delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic to a few major renewable energy projects that should have been done in 2020-2021. Comprising of 14 chapters, this book is divided into three sections. The first part, Indonesia's Current Position and Strategy for Renewable Energy, explores Indonesia's current position and strategy on New and Renewable Energy. This chapter also explores Indonesia's commitment towards Net-Zero Carbon Emission 2060. Second, Carbon-Free and Renewable Energy in Indonesia, discusses the status of renewable energy use in the world, elaborate on the carbon impact of energy shift from fossil to renewable sources, and introduce a new criterion in renewable energy: carbon-neutral energy. The last part, Indonesia's New Strategy to Achieve Net-Zero Emission in 2060, explores the macroeconomic benefits of renewable and carbon-neutral energy deployment which are increasing energy security, fueling GDP development, creating job opportunities, enhancing human welfare, and achieving gender equality. We hope that this book can be a valuable reference for stakeholders, policymakers, as well as society to recover from the pandemic crisis and find better solutions to benefit future generations.

This latest energy sector assessment, strategy, and road map for Indonesia highlights energy sector performance, major development constraints, and government development plans and strategy. This report reviews previous support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and other development partners, and outlines ADB’s future support strategy in Indonesia’s energy sector. This publication provides energy sector background information for ADB investment and technical assistance operations and will inform ADB’s 2016–2019 country partnership strategy for Indonesia.

This study provides economic models of the sustainability and affordability of renewable energy support schemes alongside operational advice on how the regulatory design may need to be modified to minimize the impact on the budget and be affordable to the poor, as well as how to identify and fill the financing gap.

This book discusses aspects of policy and techno-economic analysis of renewable energy in developing countries. Renewable energy technologies have been one of the most important strategies in addressing sustainable energy development and climate change. This book contains selected papers presented during technical and plenary sessions at the World Renewable Energy Congress, the world’s premier conference on renewable energy and sustainable development. This report provides an analysis of Indonesia's state-owned enterprises (SOEs), explores their prominent economic and social role, and explains how further reforms can unlock their commercial and developmental potential. Acting as a diagnostic to help inform the government's SOE reform agenda, the report emphasizes the need to strengthen governance and refine incentives. Explaining how SOEs have the potential to help solve core challenges around building infrastructure or tackling climate change, it shows how strengthening SOEs through targeted measures can ensure they better support Indonesia's pandemic recovery and drive stronger economic growth.
