Understanding The Impact Of Family Routines And Rituals In Relative And Kinship Families

Fiese and colleagues (2002) describe routines and rituals as naturally occurring behaviors creating a sense of predictability and stability via the underpinnings of communication, commitment, and continuity in a family unit. Although traditionally studied in intact families, these simple but profound parenting strategies are malleable and impact all family types. In this study, 65 relative and kinship legal guardians and 33 teachers were surveyed, extending the scope of routine and ritual research to "grandfamilies." Measures of routines and rituals, family cohesion and adaptability, youth behaviors at home and school, as well as open-ended descriptions of unique routines and rituals were employed. Findings reveal grandfamilies incorporate unique routines and rituals while navigating obstacles such as incarceration, scattered family members, and biological parent instability. On formal measures, routines and rituals were associated with more prosocial behaviors and less problem behaviors at home and school, as well as significantly correlated with cohesion and adaptability. Rituals were correlated with less teacher-rated emotional symptoms. Additionally, regarding cohesion and adaptability in grandfamilies, caregivers reported having strict, yet enmeshed family types. Lastly, results unexpectedly suggest that relationships of routines and rituals to youth and family outcomes become less strong when demographics and conditions of placement are factored. Small sample size prohibited evaluation of mediation effects. Further research to operationalize unique routines and rituals for examination with a broader canvas of community outcomes and including informal grandfamilies is recommended.

While family life has conspicuously changed in the past fifty years, it would be a mistake to conclude that family routines and rituals have lost their meaning. In this book Barbara H. Fiese, a clinical and developmental psychologist, examines how the practices of diverse family routines and the meanings created through rituals have evolved to meet the demands of today’s busy families. Adolescence and emerging adulthood are both critical transition phases wrought with developmental changes and challenges. One of the major developmental tasks that families of children, adolescents and emerging adults deal with is facilitating the development of emotion regulation. The practices that families engage in that attempt to create order and stability within the family - their routines and rituals - may be one key family variable that helps develop better emotion regulation. Family routines and rituals tend to create a more stable environment, which in turn may predict better outcomes for individuals (Crespo, Davide, Costa & Fletcher, 2008; Fiese, 2007; Leon & Jacobvitz, 2003). The current study examined the extent to which routines and rituals in the family of origin during adolescence contributed to longer term, post-adolescent positive psychological outcomes in emerging adults. The current study used a sample of 492 college students between the ages 18-24 years old. The college students completed a series of online questionnaires about their family routines and rituals during adolescence, their current psychological well being and emotion regulatory skills. A subset of college student had their parents participate in the study who completed similar online questionnaires about their past family routines and rituals. When emerging adults ascribed greater meaning to past family routines and rituals, this was directly related to greater psychological well being. Emerging adults and parents ascribed a different level of meaning to the family routines and rituals, which predicted greater psychological well being of emerging adults. The results of the study showed that emotion regulation was a significant mediator of the relationship between family routines and relationships and emerging adults' psychological well being. The findings of the current study support the notion that mechanisms such as family routines and rituals that families implement are related to better outcomes for individuals. When families engage in meaningful family practices during adolescence, the impact of these practices can carry over into emerging adulthood.

For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. The rapid growth of kinship foster care--full-time parenting of children by relatives or other adults who have a kinship bond with a child--has caught many child welfare agencies off guard. This monograph presents information needed by professionals, agencies, institutions, communities, and organizations to develop and provide services to kinship caregivers, kinship families, children, and parents. The monograph contains discussions of common clinical issues, suggests intervention strategies, examines kinship care's legal implications, and offers policy and program recommendations.
