Two Unfamiliar Works Of Franz Liszt 1811 1886

This document provides a resource for Franz Liszt's unfamiliar piano work, the Grosses Konzertsolo and his subsequent rearrangement of the work for two pianos entitled Concerto pathétique. The Introduction places the work in its historical context as a precursor to the great Sonata in B minor and discusses possible reasons for its various revisions. Chapter One details Liszt's productive years from 1849-1853 in Weimar and selected keyboard works from this period which are closely related to the Grosses Konzertsolo. Chapter Two provides information on Liszt's first published piano works and his experiments with form, as well as a comparison of the Grosses Konzertsolo with the Sonata in B minor, in terms of motivic and thematic development. Technical issues and obstacles to performance are also addressed. Chapter Three compares the Concerto pathétique with the Grosses Konzertsolo showing how Liszt's rearrangement becomes more practical as well as effective. Chapter Four discusses Hans von Bülow's version of the Concerto pathétique and includes a brief biography.

The Music Division of the National Széchényi Library (Budapest) houses 78 music manuscripts and scores, with all or part of each penned in the hand of Franz Liszt, one of Hungary's most prominent native sons. The library is the primary Hungarian public collection of Liszt's works and is among the world's most comprehensive. This book details the collection, classifying the works as (i) Liszt's compositions-autograph manuscripts, manuscript copies, proof-sheets or printed copies with additions and corrections in Liszt's hand (62 items); (ii) Liszt's compositions-printed or manuscript copies with autograph dedications (10 items); and (iii) Liszt's corrections and manuscript notes in and to works by other composers (6 items). Seventy-three music examples and 20 facsimile illustrations are also included. While other catalogues have been devoted to these Liszt compositions, this is the first to take full and accurate account of the collection to date. Thorough philological data of the documents, and descriptions and evaluations among the sources of the given composition are supplied. Maria Eckhardt's insightful additions concerning performance history and Liszt's relationships with dedicatees and fellow composers, based upon her previously published research, provide an enriched understanding of the compositions and their creator.

This book analyzes practices of collecting in European art museums from 1989 to the present, arguing that museums actualize absence both consciously and unconsciously, while misrepresentation is an outcome of the absent perspectives and voices of minority community members which are rarely considered in relation to contemporary art. Much of Franz Liszt's enormous musical output has remained obscure, even unknown, in part because there has been no reliable and comprehensive catalogue of his works until now. The thematic catalogue prepared by pianist-musicologist Leslie Howard and scholar-translator Michael Short presents in definitive form essential information about every one of Liszt's works. Organized alphabetically by title, each mention of each piece is also cross-referenced by genre and translated title or nickname; the Rhapsodies hongroises, for example, are alphabetized under "R" and cross-referenced under "rhapsodies," "Hungarian Rhapsodies," "Ungarische Rhapsodien," and so on. Each entry also contains incipits, information about manuscript and published sources (if any), and references to secondary sources (if any).
