Roxanne Schinas has always had a passion for wildlife. Long before she was old enough to read of Gerald Durrell's adventures she was emulating them, with pets ranging from rabbits and half-tame hedgehogs to toads, sticklebacks, locusts, and a crayfish. In the spring of 2008, while her family were cruising in southern Spain, Roxanne decided to make a survey of the seagull colony on an uninhabited island. The project began with a hand-drawn map on which the nests were plotted. Phase two was to have consisted in the study of the young birds growing up on the island, but when a local nature warden told her that most of the chicks would die, Roxanne found that she had a perfect excuse for "rescuing" two and bringing them home. Mother was not impressed... but the deed was done, and now the young naturalist had the opportunity to study, intimately, the development of Larus Cachinanns, the yellow-legged gull. Two Gulls and a Girl is Roxanne's record of events in the seagull colony and amongst her two hand-reared birds. Contains 92 black-and-white photos and illustrations. Foreword by Richard Williamson.

This volume presents 115 drawings and paintings from the holdings of collector Karen B. Cohen. The 19th-century French and English works include landscapes, portraits, figure compositions, and still lifes by great artists of the romantic period and of the Barbizon and Realist schools, beginning with Prud'hon and ending with Seurat. Among the highlights is a group of little known works by Courbet and a series of cloud studies by Constable. Ives (curator, The Metropolitan Museum of Art) provides documentation and commentary for each work, placing it within the context of the artist's development and connecting it to contemporary artistic trends and innovations. Curator Elizabeth E. Barker contributed entries on Constable and Bonington. Annotation copyrighted by Book News Inc., Portland, OR

She is sailing. She is alone. Ahead of her is the world's curve and beyond that, everything else. The known, the imagined, the imagined known. Who else has entered Tim's life the way Maud did? This young woman who fell past him, lay seemingly dead on the ground, then stood and walked. That was where it all began. As magnetic as she is inscrutable, Maud defies expectations and evades explanation - a daughter, girlfriend and mother who, in the wake of a tragedy, embarks on a dangerous voyage across the Atlantic, not knowing where it will lead . . . By the Costa Award-winning author of Pure, this is a viscerally honest, hypnotic portrait of modern love and motherhood, the lure of the sea and the ultimate unknowability of others. This pitch-perfect novel confirms Andrew Miller's position as one of the finest writers of his generation.
