Excerpt from Twenty Centuries of Paris So it happens, rather humorously, that the earliest written account of Paris is that telling of the destruction which left its site a clean slate upon which the Romans might begin to write its story. For five hundred years they wrote, until the Frankish invasion swept its destructive might across Romanized Gaul. Excerpt from Imperial Paris: Including New Scenes for Old Visitors Some of the papers contained in this book have already appeared in Household Words; but there are many which are now published for the first time. Two or three of these original chapters, form part of a work I had once projected, on the Poor of Paris, but which other avocations compelled me to abandon. They may, however, stimulate some inquirer who has the leisure to finish a task that could not fail to interest the English public. Chifi'ons and Cliifi'oniers; the Four Seasons in Prose; the French Waiter' s Story; Departed this Life in Paris; street-note and Paris under the Bees, are original chapters, in which the reader will find, if I am not mistaken, views of Parisian activity with which no book has yet made him acquainted. In the paper entitled The English Painted by the French, I have woven into one narrative, a series of quotations from various French writers, who have written recently on En g land. It presents, at a glance, a series of whimsical. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Jean-Christophe in Paris: The Market-Place, Antoinette, the House After having satisfied the curiosity of the customs, he took his seat again in the train for Paris. Night was over the fields that were soaked with the rain. The hard lights of the sta tions accentuated the sadness of the interminable plain buried in darkness. The trains, more and more numerous, that passed, rent the air with their shrieking whistles, which broke upon the torpor of the sleeping passengers. The train was nearing Paris. Christophe was ready to get out an hour before they ran in; he had jammed his hat down on his head; he had buttoned his coat up to his neck for fear of the robbers, with whom he had been told Paris was infested; twenty times he had got up and sat down; twenty times he had moved his bag from the rack to the seat, from the seat to the rack, to the exasperation of his fellow-passengers, against whom he knocked every time with his usual clumsiness. An innovative history of the fashion industry, focusing on the connections between Paris and New York, art and finance, and design and manufacturing. Fashion is one of the most dynamic industries in the world, with an annual retail value of $3 trillion and globally recognized icons like Coco Chanel, Christian Dior, and Yves Saint Laurent. How did this industry generate such economic and symbolic capital? Focusing on the roles of entrepreneurs, designers, and institutions in fashion’s two most important twentieth-century centers, Paris to New York tells the history of the industry as a negotiation between art and commerce. In the late nineteenth century, Paris-based firms set the tone for a global fashion culture nurtured by artistic visionaries. In the burgeoning New York industry, however, the focus was on mass production. American buyers, trend scouts, and designers crossed the Atlantic to attend couture openings, where they were inspired by, and often accused of counterfeiting, designs made in Paris. For their part, Paris couturiers traveled to New York to understand what American consumers wanted and to make deals with local manufacturers for whom they designed exclusive garments and accessories. The cooperation and competition between the two continents transformed the fashion industry in the early and mid-twentieth century, producing a hybrid of art and commodity. Véronique Pouillard shows how the Paris–New York connection gave way in the 1960s to a network of widely distributed design and manufacturing centers. Since then, fashion has diversified. Tastes are no longer set by elites alone, but come from the street and from countercultures, and the business of fashion has transformed into a global enterprise.
