Trends In Astroparticle Physics Proceedings Of The Ucla International Conference

The proceedings of this workshop consideres the prospects for opening up a new window on the universe with the generation of High Energy Neutrino telescopes now under construction or being planned. Potential sources of high energy neutrinos such as binary pulsars, supernovae, and active galactic nuclei are discussed. In particular, the recent model of Stecker and collaborators, in which neutrinos with energies as high as 1000 TeV are produced in measurable quantities in the cores of quasars and other active galaxies is critically reviewed.

This workshop held in Valencia, following the earlier meetings organized at UIMP in 1991 and 1993 was open to all who wished to attend and addressed the basic issues in elementary particle physics research for the coming decade, with emphasis on the new physics topics pertaining to the electroweak sector, supersymmetry and neutrino physics, as well as the related experimentation at the new CERN accelerators LEP200 and LHC. Although it is expected that most attendees are working in the field, some time are devoted to reviews of basic results. The topics covered are the standard model, top and higgs physics, neutrino physics, astroparticle physics, physics beyond the standard model, grand unification and supersymmetry, physics at LEP200 and LHC, future perspectives.

The workshop collected together theoreticians and experimentalists for a discussion about the most recent experiments and their impact on theoretical ideas. The discussion included the new data from LEP and SLD, the evidence for the top quark from Tevatron, the structure function measurements from HERA, and the searches for dark matter. Also, new projects for physics with large neutrino detectors and CP violation at e+e- factories were presented, and a survey of high energy astroparticle physics was included. Particular attention was paid to the interplay between microscopical and cosmological scales.

From October 10 to 12, 1991 the Second International Conference on Trends in Astroparticle-Physics took place at Aachen, Germany. The meeting was the second in a series that started in 1990 at UCLA. It was attended by about 100 physicists from allover the world and covered the interface of elementary particles and astrophysics. Topics covered included Neutrino-Telescopes in preparation, high energy gamma ray physics, but also new ideas for future detectors. detectors, cosmology and particle Many people have worked hard on the preparation for the meeting and deserve many thanks, in particular D. This volume addresses four major topical areas: imaging detectors for astrophysics application, noble liquid compound, medical application and high energy application.Noble liquid and scintillating fiber technology, which opened a new era in high spatial (energy) resolution, high speed detection of charged particles and gamma rays, is developing further and its application seems to be concentrated in three major directions: astrophysics, high energy physics and medical imaging. In addition, the book covers new developments in imaging photon detectors, hybrid type (fiber and noble liquid) detectors for WIMP search and several promising techniques for new imaging detectors.

This international conference focussed on several exciting frontier areas of particle physics at energy scales not realizable in terrestrial accelerators and their significance in the fields of astrophysics and cosmology. The topics discussed included physics beyond the standard model, violations of discrete symmetries, neutrino physics, neutrino astronomy, experimental detection of dark matter, gravitation and feebler new forces, cosmic rays, etc. Some of the highlights are the latest results from the Kamiokande neutrino detector and status reports on experimental facilities under commission to detect solar and atmospheric neutrinos, WIMP's and dark matter candidates.
