Excerpt from Transactions of the Historical Society, 1872, Vol. 1 Towards the close of the year 1868 a proposal was suggested of establishing a Society to deal with a class of historical subjects which, while they do not fall under the cognizance of Archaeological Institutions, have not been comprehended within the programme of other Associations. Biographical and chronological investigations, it was stated, were often conducted by individuals who, however earnest in prosecuting their inquiries, did not possess facilities such as to render their researches available; while it was felt that infor mation could be more readily acquired by those who possessed a recognised authority as members of a national institution. These sentiments, being generally approved, led to the forma tion of the Historical Society. The Society's Transactions during its first two sessions, 1869-70 and 1870-71, are included in the two Parts which togem volume. The Society aims at the reproduction and illustration of rare historical tracts, and the recovery, from recondite sources, of materials which might illustrate the less explored paths of. Excerpt from Transactions of the Cambridge Philological Society, Vol. 1: From 1872 to 1880; With Introductory Essay, Reviews, and Appendix The appearance of this volume is due in the first instance to a wish expressed by several members of the Cambridge Philological Society itself to possess an account of its earlier proceedings. It has hitherto been the custom of the Society to print and privately circulate amongst its members Memoranda of the subjects discussed and business done at its meetings. These have varied very considerably in amount from a mere mention of the title of a paper to a full or even complete account of its contents. Though these Memoranda were not prepared for publication, they have been reprinted as they stand in order to preserve the record. But their contributors have been allowed the opportunity of adding corrections; and references have been added where a paper has been printed elsewhere in extenso. In one case a paper chie y of controversial interest has been omitted at the request of its author. It may be added that some of the papers or abstracts of papers, although they have been printed as Memoranda, ' have never been published before. Amongst these I may men tion Mr. Savage's on the lengthening of a short vowel in Greek before a mute and liquid with the tables attached. The Society was organized mainly under the auspices of the late Hon. Albert gallatin, a man of great research, vigor, and keen ness of intellect, who brought around him such men as Dr. Edward Robinson, John L. Stephens, John R. Bartlett, Theo dore Dwight, Dr. Francis, George Folsom, Professor W. W. Turner, Dr. Hawks, and others, all and each of distinction in their respective departments of inquiry. Mr. Gallatin's house was the true seat of the society, and Mr. Gallatin him self its controlling spirit. His name gave it character, and from his purse mainly was defrayed the cost of the two volumes of Transactions which constitute about the only claim the Society possesses on the respect of the scientific world, and about its only title to be considered a learned society.
