Training Manual For Community Based Initiatives

Improvements in health cannot be achieved in isolation as they require an integrated, multisectorial development approach. The WHO's Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean has introduced the following community-based initiatives: basic development needs approach; healthy villages programme; healthy cities programme; women in health and development. These community-based initiatives have provided a stimulus for health and human development. This training manual provides material to help develop trainers; update the knowledge of field managers; and reinforce leadership and management skills.

Foundations for Community Health Workers Foundations for Community Health Workers is a training resource for client- and community-centered public health practitioners, with an emphasis on promoting health equality. Based on City College of San Francisco's CHW Certificate Program, it begins with an overview of the historic and political context informing the practice of community health workers. The second section of the book addresses core competencies for working with individual clients, such as behavior change counseling and case management, and practitioner development topics such as ethics, stress management, and conflict resolution. "Community Content-Based Instruction" grew out of several development initiatives and field needs. It began to take shape in a Gender and Public Health Education for Teachers Workshop and an In-Service Education Workshop for Volunteers and their counterparts, in the spring of 1996 in Eritrea. Since that time, the concept has been further developed and refined through efforts in the field and at headquarters. This manual is a comprehensive reference on community content-based instruction (CCBI). It provides information on the history and development of CCBI as an education developmental approach related to corresponding approaches to development. It provides field examples including programming insights and suggestions for staff, various training agendas and possible training scenarios, a broad array of CCBI lessons, unit planning, and references to help in the implementation of CCBI. Community-based participatory research (CBPR) emerged in response to the longstanding tradition of "top-down" research-studies in which social scientists observe social phenomena and community problems as outsiders, separate from the participants' daily lives. CBPR is more immersive, fostering partnerships between academic and community organizations that increase the value and consequence of the research for all partners. The current perspectives gleaned from this school of research have been wildly well-received, in no small part because they address the complexity of the human experience in their conclusions. Many of the world's population lives in villages and rural areas without access to safe water sources or basic sanitation. This guide has been developed as part of the 'healthy villages' project to improve the health of rural communities by promoting local awareness and actions by community groups.
