Towards Zero Hunger 1945 2030

This book showcases a unique collection of images documenting how FAO has played a leading role in combating hunger worldwide since 1945. It highlights the Organization’s ongoing efforts to help its Members achieve “zero hunger” in a changing world that is facing new and pressing challenges from migration and climate change. The foreword by the FAO Director-General and the introduction to zero hunger by the Director of the FAO Office for Corporate Communication provide the context for FAO’s work and a real-life example of how “zero hunger” can change people’s lives for the better. In addition, there are profiles of the five recently appointed FAO Special Goodwill Ambassadors for Zero Hunger. Next, the photos and their captions, with some accompanying text, illustrate FAO’s work and significant moments in its history. Thus, the reader can see the single frames in the context of the whole picture.

This report provides estimates of investment costs, both public and private, required to eliminate chronic dietary energy deficits, or to achieve zero hunger by 2030. This target is consistent with achieving both the Sustainable Development Goal 2, to eliminate hunger by 2030, and the Sustainable Development Goal 1, to eradicate poverty. The report adopts a reference “baseline” scenario, reflecting a “business-as-usual” situation, to estimate the additional investment requirements. In this scenario, around 650 million people will still suffer from hunger in 2030. The investment requirements to eliminate hunger by 2030 are then estimated. Hunger is eliminated through a combination of social protection and targeted “pro-poor “ investments. The first component aims to bring the poor immediately above the extreme poverty line through social protection by a “transfer to cover the poverty gap” (PGT) The second component involves additional investment required to stimulate and to sustain higher pro-poor growth of incomes and employment than in the business-as-usual scenario. This would, in turn, reduce the need for social protection to cover the PGT. The analysis is complemented by looking at alternative ways to achieve zero hunger by 2030.

Some geographic regions around the globe that are rich in terms of modern agriculture technologies, face a dilemma when it comes to storing excess produce, such as grains and even seasonal fruits and vegetable. They are often forced to destroy the surplus agricultural products due to the constraints of poor logistic systems, food warehouses and micro-economy system management. In contrast, millions of people in extreme rural areas are suffering from hunger and poverty. This book offers suggestions to resolve the problems of food security and poverty in rural areas and ensure minimum social justice so that those in rural areas have regular access to food and shelter. It also discusses how to develop sustainable foundations in extreme rural locations using indigenous resources to tackle issues like hunger, malnutrition, and chronic health problems.

Biomass finds its application as feedstock to produce biofuels and other value-added products, which finds usage in energy and environmental areas with particular focus on bioenergy production from different biomass and high-volume, medium-value industrial products. At the heart of the 2030 Agenda was a promise to prioritize two objectives: to eradicate poverty and end hunger and malnutrition in all their forms. While global hunger, measured by the prevalence of undernourishment, had been on the decline, the absolute number of hungry people remained very high. In response, heads of states at the G7 Summit in Elmau in 2015 committed to lift 500 million people out of hunger and malnutrition by 2030 as part of a broader effort undertaken with partner countries to support the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, i.e. Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 2) to end hunger and malnutrition by 2030. Nevertheless, the number of undernourished people in the world kept rising, from 653 million people in 2015 to 690 million people in 2019, highlighting the challenge of achieving the goal of Zero Hunger and malnutrition by 2030. This study reviews the food security situation and change therein in light of recent developments, including COVID-19. It also analyses to which extent G7 countries responded to the challenge and their commitment in terms of development assistance and outlines promising investment opportunities to meet the 2030 targets.

The report summarizes country achievements in the Asia and Pacific region in advancing towards the 2030 SDG deadlines. These success stories involve FAO offices working with governments and partners in some 21 countries in Asia and a complitation of success stories from the Pacific. It was initially published for presentation at the 35th Session of the FAO Regional Conference for Asia and the Pacific (APRC-35) in Thimphu, Bhutan (17-20 February 2020), but these achievements will be of interest to member countries and other development partners for several years to come.
