Australia was a grim place during the Great Depression with little or no money for leisure. Small bets on horse racing were a common diversion, but illegal thanks to the pious with political sway. Outlawing the practice simply created opportunities for murderous thugs, criminal activity and corruption. Police were required to enforce the hated gaming laws, pitting themselves against the harmless while trying to hold back serious criminal attacks on them. Rules were bent and gaming police malpractice became systematic. Constable Mendelssohn Miller refused to enter a consipiracy to convict an innocent man for betting. He became a 'rat' to his officers, peers and union. His destruction was sought by those threatened by his stand. He fought for five years at great personal cost, aided only by the Truth newspaper and its proprietor, Ezra Norton. He told the truth and shone a light on corruption, illuminating its workings to three Royal Commissions. Refusing to break he stood tall as his nemeses fell.

"Breaking Ranks eloquently documents the many ways that militarism infiltrates ordinary lives, and is a powerful reminder of the personal costs of war. A model of sensitive and perceptive analysis of oral history interviews, Breaking Ranks reaches its audience on many levels. It is essential reading for anyone concerned about better connecting intellectually and humanly with the current political moment."—Robert A. Rubinstein, The Maxwell School of Syracuse University "Breaking Ranks is extraordinarily well written, lively and compelling. This is the first book to combine gripping, personal stories of anti-war Iraq and Afghanistan veterans with rigorous academic analysis."—Aaron Glantz, author of The War Comes Home: Washington's Battle Against America's Veterans "As Matthew Gutmann and Catherine Lutz show in this timely and important book, soldiers can and do think on their own and come to political and ethical conclusions that often run contrary to what the military might want, expect, or portray. In Breaking Ranks, Gutmann and Lutz give us a valuable addition to our understanding of soldiers, politics, and ethics."—Andrew Bickford, George Mason University

Timothy Gowing, Sergeant-Major of the Royal Fusiliers in this book shares his personal experience during the war. He shares the impact of rank among militants. An excerpt from the introductory part of the book reads this "Great Britain has produced a race of heroes who, in moments of danger and terror, have stood as "firm as the rocks of their native shores," and when half the world has been arrayed against them have fought the battles of their country with heroic fortitude. We have written with no wish to foster a bellicose spirit, for we regard war as an evil that is only endurable when the cause is just. But no love of peace should deaden our admiration of brilliant deeds and unquailing heroism. War, like peace, has its virtues, which only a fanatic will under-value."
