Three Comrades

"The Three Comrades" is a 1936 novel by the German author Erich Maria Remarque. The novel is written in first person by the main character Robert Lohkamp. The protagonist reflects a somewhat disillusioned outlook on life due to his horrifying experiences in the trenches of the First World War's French-German front – the typical problem of the post-Great War Society.

General John A. Wickham, commander of the famous 101st Airborne Division in the 1970s and subsequently Army Chief of Staff, once visited Antietam battlefield. Gazing at Bloody Lane where, in 1862, several Union assaults were brutally repulsed before they finally broke through, he marveled, "You couldn't get American soldiers today to make an attack like that." Significantly, their letters were also uncensored by military authorities, and are uniquely frank in their criticism and detailed in their reports of marches and battles, relations between officers and men, political debates, and morale.
