Excerpt from Thoughts on Peace and War Ihave a word or two more. For the doctrines, and for the opinions of this Address, I am alone responsible. For a moment, it was but for a moment, - it was thought that a word, or a sentence or two, might have been adapted to some temporary criticism of a portion of the public press. The criticism was the probable result of an imperfect memory, or of some unhappy tendency to find fault, and this without the current excuse. It has not been heeded. The Address was written, as above stated, at short notice and when it was finished, it was done. I have given a copy for the press, in the deep conviction of its truth. Excerpt from More Thoughts on the War It matters not whether these shortcomings are less or greater one year than another. The desire of men's hearts does not wait upon results, and they do not love less the peace that is not because of the war that is. Rather they are more passionately aware of what that peace might be; and if in. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Genesis of War and the Foundation of Peace In proceeding to disentangle and lay straight in our understanding the elements of any one of the complex problems that harass the life of the race, it is necessary to trace pres ent conditions from the1r pomt of origin. It may be said, strictly, that the finite mind is not capable of dealing with origins. But we can greatly aid our thinking by excluding inc1 dentals and thereby reducing the complexity of the problem to its simplest terms; we can return, in our thought, to that stage of de velopment Where human life included only the simple, fundamental relations and experi ences. Today it includes essentially no more. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Thoughts on War and Peace: An Inquiry Into the Conceptions Prevailing in Foreign Politics Public attention in the last few years has been pointedly drawn to the creation of a League of Nations. However attractive the setting up of an international body may appear to us, especially at this juncture in the world's history, we should not shrink from facing the fact that the problem of war and peace cannot be solved within the actual system in foreign politics. The present work endeavours to show that the first step towards a new order of things in international relations is to remove from our political thought the existing conceptions of war and peace - that is to say, all conceptions which make the political life of a nation contradictory to the ideals of humanity. Only after such a radical change of mind can we build up something solid in international politics. In exposing the artificial character of the proposals advanced on behalf of a League of Nations, I have had in view more their development in the future than their possible results at present. That any League of Nations is better than none cannot be gainsaid; but there should be a wider understanding about the meaning of such a vast enterprise. If we do not do the work thoroughly, we shall have to undo it sooner or later; and we shall relapse into our former position on account of the very fact that we have not changed our values in foreign politics. Excerpt from The State in Peace and War In the following pages an attempt has been made to follow the evolution of political ideas from the origin of the City-State to the rise of the modem Nation-State, and to give a concise statement of what seems to me to be the true principle of the latter. I have attempted to guard this principle from misconception, and specially to indicate the intimate relation of the State to the various subordinate organisations which it includes and which are essential to its perfection, as well as its relation to foreign states and to the world at large. To this has been added a short statement of the regulations of civilised warfare, a reference to the character of the British Empire, and a consideration of the proposals for a League of Nations. I have in the main avoided all reference to the present war, contenting myself with indicating the opposing conceptions of England and Germany. It may appear that I have gone a long way round, but perhaps this is a case in which "the longest way round is the shortest way home." Excerpt from Peace and War SO rapid is their advance, that events in the social world are apt to leave the preconceived ideas Of philosophers in the rear. Hence the pacific movement which, for some years past, has been making considerable progress, and is likely before long to become even more extensive, has received but feeble support from philosophy. It owed its initiation to politicians and philanthropists, and they it is who are helping to develop it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from War and Peace, Vol. 2 O God, I wonder whether everything is all right, thought Rostov, stopping for a moment with a sinking heart, and rushing along the vestibule and the familiar warped staircase. The same old door-handle, the spots on which had been the cause of so much anger in the count ess, submitted to the same weak pressure. A tallow candle was burning in the antechamber.
