The semi-stable homotopy groups of a topological space [italic]X are the unstable homotopy groups [lowercase Greek]Pi [subscript]*[capital Greek]Sigma[superscript]n[italic]X, [italic]n [greater than symbol] 0, of the suspensions of [italic]X. This monograph is concerned with computing these semi-stable homotopy groups using the unstable Adams spectral sequence for the free iterated loop spaces [capital Greek]Omega[superscript italic]n [capital Greek]Sigma[superscript italic]n [italic]X generated by [italic]X.

During the Winter and spring of 1985 a Workshop in Algebraic Topology was held at the University of Washington. The course notes by Emmanuel Dror Farjoun and by Frederick R. Cohen contained in this volume are carefully written graduate level expositions of certain aspects of equivariant homotopy theory and classical homotopy theory, respectively. M.E. Mahowald has included some of the material from his further papers, represent a wide range of contemporary homotopy theory: the Kervaire invariant, stable splitting theorems, computer calculation of unstable homotopy groups, and studies of L(n), Im J, and the symmetric groups.

This interdisciplinary book covers a wide range of subjects, from pure mathematics (knots, braids, homotopy theory, number theory) to more applied mathematics (cryptography, algebraic specification of algorithms, dynamical systems) and concrete applications (modeling of polymers and ionic liquids, video, music and medical imaging). The main mathematical focus throughout the book is on algebraic modeling with particular emphasis on braid groups. The research methods include algebraic modeling using topological structures, such as knots, 3-manifolds, classical homotopy groups, and braid groups. The applications address the simulation of polymer chains and ionic liquids, as well as the modeling of natural phenomena via topological surgery. The treatment of computational structures, including finite fields and cryptography, focuses on the development of novel techniques. These techniques can be applied to the design of algebraic specifications for systems modeling and verification. This book is the outcome of a workshop in connection with the research project Thales on Algebraic Modeling of Topological and Computational Structures and Applications, held at the National Technical University of Athens, Greece in July 2015. The reader will benefit from the innovative approaches to tackling difficult questions in topology, applications and interrelated research areas, which largely employ algebraic tools.

For each prime [italic]p there is a 'lambda algebra' which serves, among other things, as an [italic]E1 term for the (stable or unstable) Adams spectral sequence. This paper describes algorithms and programs for computing the homology of these algebras using a mainframe computer. Tables of the results are included for [italic]p = 2 and [italic]p = 3.

This proceedings volume contains articles from the conference held at Rutgers University in honor of Haim Brezis and Felix Browder, two mathematicians who have had a profound impact on partial differential equations, functional analysis, and geometry. Mathematicians attending the conference had interests in noncompact variational problems, pseudo-holomorphic curves, singular and smooth solutions to problems admitting a conformal (or some group) invariance, Sobolev spaces on manifolds, and configuration spaces. One day of the proceedings was devoted to Einstein equations and related topics. Contributors to the volume include, among others, Sun-Yung A. Chang, Luis A. Caffarelli, Carlos E. Kenig, and Gang Tian. The material is suitable for graduate students and researchers interested in problems in analysis and differential equations on noncompact manifolds.
