Excerpt from Florida's Timber: May, 1961 The period between the completion of Florida's first Forest Survey in 1936 and the third in 1959 spans nearly a quarter of a century. In 1936, the era of large sawmills was coming to a close, but half the lumber was still produced by a dozen large mills. Taxes were high and lum ber prices had not recovered from the depression slump. Fire burned uncontrolled over much of the forest area. In 1936, only million acres out of the total million acres of timber land received protection from fire. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Report on the Wood Using Industries of Florida Agriculture has not yet greatly lessened the timber areas of Florida. About one acre in eight has been cleared. In many parts, in the southern half of the State particularly, the forest cover is so thin that the woods afford about a good pasturage as if the trees were not there. In the northern part, where the hardwoods of the Appalachian region overlap on Florida and soil is better, the forests' are generally much heavier. Many of the Florida rivers are ideal as driving streams for logs. The currents are sluggish, and the water usually deep. There are a few bars and no rapids. On small streams the chief obstacle in the way of log driving is frequently trees which grow along the banks and down to the extreme low water mark. These trunks sometimes so nearly close the channels that little space is left for logs to pass through. That difficulty is not often met on the larger rivers. Excerpt from The Timber Supply of the United States The total quantity of wood cut to obtain the products listed in the table was not less than 20 billion cubic feet. Rapidly-as the population of the United States has increased, the lumber consumption has increased still more rapidly. In round num bers, and allowing for incomplete reports, the lumber cut in 1880 was 18 billion feet; in 1890, 24 billion feet, and in 1900, 35 billion feet. The increase in population from 1880 to 1900 was 52 per cent, but in lumber cut 94 pei cent. The United States is now using annually 400 board feet of lumber per capita while the average for Europe is but 60 feet per capita. Table 2 affords a better understanding of the vast amount of lumber used. This gives the lumber cut of the principal States since 1880. The figures for 1880, 1890, 1900, and 1905 are those compiled by the census; the total cut is estimated by assuming an average out between census dates. This brings the total cut since 1880 to more than 7 00 billion feet - a truly astonishing figure when we stop to consider it. This quantity of lumber would make a floor 1 inch thick over Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Delaware, or an area of square miles. Excerpt from Timber Resources for America's Future The report of the Timber Resource Review is in the nature of a State-of - the-union message by the Forest Service on our national timber supplies. This comprehensive appraisal of the timber situation in the United States was started early in 1952. About a year and a half was devoted to planning the project; a year to field surveys and collection of data; a year to compila tion, interpretation, and preparation of the pre liminary report; and another year and a half to review and revision of the preliminary report and preparation of this final report. The Timber Resource Review is the latest in a series of overall timber appraisals in which the Forest Service has shared. The most recent one prior to this study was in 1945. One of the unique features of the present undertaking is that it was planned and executed in the field with the wide spread collaboration of a great number of States, forest industries, and individuals. Although this has engendered some delays, they have been more than offset by better planning, by more intensive surveys than the Forest Service could have under taken by itself, and it is hoped by more widespread understanding and acceptance of the findings. Excerpt from Forest Resources of South Florida, 1949 Acreage of forest land: Approximately 42 percent of the total land area in South Florida is occupied by forests. However, one - third of the forest land is considered nonproductive because it lacks the capacity to produce timber of commercial size or because the timber is so scattered and isolated it could not be economically harvested. In 1949, about million acres in this Survey Unit were classified as commercial forest land. The original survey in 1936 found very nearly the same acreage in commercial forest land, indicating little, if any, change during the period. It is interesting to note that marsh lands in the Everglades occupy a slightly greater acreage in the Unit than the forests do. The forest and marsh areas combined make up nearly 86 percent of the total land area. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
