Excerpt from Teaching Peace in the Schools Through Instruction in American History To the observer of important world movements to-day, two antagonistic groups of phenomena present themselves. One has to do with the interests of international peace and good will; the other with the stupendous preparations for war. Such highly civilized countries as England and Germany for example, are imposing overwhelming financial burdens upon themselves in order to build up their armies and navies. To such an extent have jealousy, fear, and suspicion seized them that in wild panic they rush to build Dreadnoughts and other wise increase their fighting strength. The claim is that great armaments are absolutely necessary for the preservation of peace, although it is plain that such preparation invites national bankruptcy. On the other hand, such organizations as the inter-parliamentary Union, The Hague Conferences, and the five hundred peace societies of the world are moulding public opinion in favor of a new international spirit. Excerpt from The Teaching of History in Elementary Schools To-day the attention of everyone is fixed on the history that is being made from hour to hour. Our grasp of the ideals which we have formed in the past is being put to the test, and the course of the future is being determined. Patriotism is not a matter of discussion, but of action. The connection between the lessons which the citizens of Great Britain have learned from their knowledge of her history and the significance which they attach to the present momentous struggle is so close that we hope to be pardoned for publishing a book on the teaching of history even at such a time. It is true that, in the midst of such events, it is hard to view the past in its proper perspective and not to regard the whole course of history from the standpoint of the present issues. The book, however, was in the main written before the war, when it was possible to look back on the past and forward into the future with less emotion and more coldblooded judgment. What emboldens us to publish it now is that, reading our manuscript again in these days when interpretations of history are being tested in the fire, we see nothing to withdraw and little to alter. The nation has entered this war in no jingo spirit. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Teaching of History and Civics in the Elementary, and the Secondary School It is the aim of this book to aid teachers of history, and especially those who have not had special training in historical work, better to comprehend the nature of the subject. Until they have considered the development of history as a way of portraying the experience of mankind, and know something of the methods by which it seeks to reach the sure basis of fact, and until they have seriously studied the problems of historical instruction, they cannot feel a large interest in the subject, and consequently cannot inspire their pupils with such an interest. The first part of this book has been written to set them on the way toward a better comprehension of these aspects of history. The second part offers a review of the general field, which may guide those who require such help intelligently to study its many phases. While this review is constructed on the basis of the programme suggested in the first part, it may serve almost equally well where the programme in use includes only sections of the field, or distributes the matter in a different way.
