Excerpt from The Story of Rouen HE story of a town must differ from the history of a nation in that it is concerned not with large issues but with familiar and domestic details. A nation has no individuality. No single phrase can fairly sum up the characteristics of a people. But a town is like one face picked out of a crowd, a face that shows not merely the experience of our human span, but the traces of centuries that go backward into unrecorded time. In all this slow development a character that is individual and inseparable is gradually formed. That character never fades. It is to be found first in the geographical laws of permanent or slowly changed surroundings, and secondly in the outward aspect of the dwellings built by man, for his personal comfort or for the good of the material com munity, or for his spiritual needs. Excerpt from Journal of the Siege of Rouen, 1591 The present fragment, though belonging to the history of another country, claims the attention of the Camden Society, not merely from having been written by an Englishman, but also because it relates principally to the services of an army of English auxiliaries. The narrative does not include the whole period of their campaign, but it supplies an account of the greater part of it. It appears to have been written in the form of letters, which were despatched to some friend at a distance, and afterwards transcribed in a consecutive form. Commencing on the 13th of Aug. 1591, when the earl of Essex, the English general, was still near Dieppe, the port at which he landed, it proceeds day by day to the 6th of September. It is then suspended until the 3rd of the following month; when it is resumed, and thenceforward continued to the 24th of December, at which period it was again closed, in order to be transmitted to the friend for whose information it had been written. Excerpt from The Churches of Rouen The descriptive chapters of this little book are the result of personal observations made during a visit to Rouen in May 1900, undertaken for the purpose of examining and photographing the chief churches of the city. While thus employed I made use of sundry guide-books, French and English, and collected all the information I could from vergers and others connected with the churches. The scaffolding which at that time covered the west front of the Cathedral rendered it impossible for me to examine this part of the church; any description, moreover, that I could have given would have been of little value in pointing out features to be studied, as many, when the scaffolding is removed on the completion of the restoration, will have been altered, if they have not entirely vanished. The west front of St. Maclou was also undergoing some repairs, and owing to the overhead wires of the tramways it is no longer possible to get a satisfactory general photographic view of St. Ouen from the N.W., so that in three cases the blocks illustrating the book have been made from photographs taken some time ago; all the rest are from my own negatives taken in 1900. I obtained much historical information from a book published in 1847, entitled Album Rouennais, illustrated by lithographs and written by Charles Richard, Keeper of the Municipal Archives and permanent Secretary of the Royal Academy of Rouen; also from a charming and picturesquely written book, the Story of Rouen in the "Mediaeval Towns" series by Theodore Andrea Cook, published in 1899. My thanks are due to Canon Barrie for permission kindly granted to photograph the interior of the Cathedral, and to M. Edouard Julien, the intelligent sacristan of St. Ouen (well known to most visitors to Rouen), who obtained for me a like permission from the Cure of his church. Excerpt from Wanderings by the Seine: From Rouen to the Source For a short period in summer, it is possible to travel from Rouen to Paris by a passage steam - boat on the Seine: the voyage, however, is long, and not always pleasant. Our eyes, accustomed to the magnificent panorama presented by the lower part of the river, become discontented even with beauty itself the towns, villages, and castles, flit past us like shadows, and carry away with them, like shadows, their historical associations; till, by the time we reach our destination, we heartily regret having forsaken the moral world of the past and present, for the cold, dead face of external nature.
