It was a little old woman who had fallen in the midst of the forest. When the Prince went to her he saw that she was so dirty and so badly dressed that he was afraid he might soil his clothes, so he did not dare touch her, even to help her up. "Here, good woman," he said kindly, tossing to her a large part of the gold which the Fairy had given him, "take this. I haven't time to stop to help you up, as I am in a big hurry, but I hear some one coming and perhaps he will help you.' He hesitated a moment, and then decided that he would return to the city, thinking that in no better way could he spend his money than in buying new clothes and adornments for his handsome self, and later on there would be plenty of time to go in search of Aurora's hair. V the magic cane it was Prince Perfect who arrived just as Prince Frivolous left the old woman lying in the woods. Punning up to the poor creature, he lifted her gently, and then gave her the entire contents of his sack of gold. Hardly had he done this when to his astonishment the old woman turned into the beautiful young Fairy of Hope, still holding in her hand the walking-stick of the old woman. "You have proved," she said sweetly, "that you are the best of the four Princes and so are most worthy of Aurora's hand. From now on I shall watch over you. Take this cane, and if ever you find yourself in a difficulty, ask the cane in my name to help you." And the Fairy disappeared so quickly that the Prince had no time to thank her. Happy and confident, Prince Bradamor kept on his way to the high mountain where the Genie lived. At the end of a month filled with countless...

Once upon a time there was a boy named Rupert, the sharpest and most prudent lad in his village, and indeed in any of those to be found for twenty leagues around. One night he was with a group of boys of his own age, who, gathered round the fire, were listening with amazement to a veteran soldier, covered with scars, which had gained him the modest stripes of a sergeant pensioner, and who was telling the story of his adventures. The narrator was at the most interesting point of his tale. "The great City of Fortune," he said, "is situated on the summit of a very high mountain, so steep that only very few have succeeded in reaching the top. There gold circulates in such abundance that the inhabitants do not know what to do with the precious metal. Houses are built of it, the walls of the fortress are of solid silver, and the cannons which defend it are enormous pierced diamonds. The streets are paved with duros, always new, because as soon as they begin to lose their brilliance they are replaced by others just minted. "You ought to see the cleanliness of it! What dirt there is is pure gold dust, which the dust carts collect in order to throw in large baskets into the drains. "The pebbles against which we stumble continually are brilliants as large as nuts, despised on account of the extraordinary abundance with which the soil supplies them. In a word, he who lives there may consider the most powerful of the earth as beggars. "The worst of it is that the path which leads there is rough and difficult, and most people succumb without having been able to arrive at the city of gold."
