Excerpt from The Reformed Presbyterian Church in Scotland: Its Origin and History, 1680-1876, With an Appendix Apart, however, from their testimony in regard to this evil and danger, resulting from a Civil Government in which Prelacy was continued as an essential element, those who dissented from the Revolution Settlement, and from whom the Reformed Presbyterian Church arose, were animated with an earnest zeal for the maintenance of religious ordinances. They strove to exist as a Church, and how far they succeeded, and what difficulties they had to surmount in the attempt, is the interesting story recorded in this volume. Excerpt from The Culdee Church: Or, the Historical Connection of Modern Presbyterian Churches With Those of Apostolic Times, Through the Church of Scotland ON the western coast of Scotland, near the bold juttings of the Ross of Mull, lies a little island, only two and one-half miles long, by one and one-half broad, with but a few hundred acres of arable land, and nothing ln its scenery or position to arrest the at tention of the traveller. And yet of that bleak islet, Dr. Johnson, who never spake any thing good of Scotland that he could avoid, was constrained to write, That man is little to be envied, whose pat riotism would not gain force on the plains of Marathon, or whose piety would not grow warmer among the ruins of Iona! Excerpt from Scotland and the Scottish Church Of those in England who are acquainted with the history of Scottish Episcopacy, it may be safely as serted that the depth of their own Church principles is usually proportionate to the regard which they bear to the depressed Church in the North. Yet, to a great extent, the grossest ignorance and misap prehension on this subject are unhappily prevalent. There are, indeed, members of the Church of Eng land who regard Scottish Episcopacy as a schism, set up in unrighteous opposition to the Kirk, and who sympathize altogether with the party, which, owing to accidental circumstances, has obtained the advan tages of a legal establishment. It appeared to the writer, from such considera tions as the above, that some utility might be found in a book which, though small and portable, should yet serve to clear up popular mistakes and miscon ceptions, and to unravel the apparently entangled web of Scottish Church History. It was thought also that such a work, while giving due credit to the Establishment and its ofi'shoots, might plainly set forth the real grounds of Episcopacy, might shew the instruction to be derived from the misfortunes of other communities, and might point out the benefits and the dangers connected with free synodical action.
