Here’s what former Chicago White Sox owner Bill Veeck had to say about baseball: “This is a game to be savored, not gulped. There’s time to discuss everything between pitches or between innings.” That’s just one of the thousands of quotes gathered in this gigantic collection, and they include some of the wisest, wittiest comments made on America’s national pastime. Edited by Wayne Stewart, a sports writer with almost 30 years of experience and 20 books to his name, and with a Foreword by Roger Kahn, who wrote the seminal book on baseball, The Boys of Summer, this anthology includes observations from players, managers, owners, writers, fans, and more. Among the greats whose thoughts are here to savor: Hank Aaron, Satchel Paige, Babe Ruth, Sandy Koufax, Willie Mays, Derek Jeter, Don Zimmer, Roger Angell, Red Barber, George Will, and countless others. This is a great gift book for any baseball fan! "If you've got a problem with New York City being the capital of the world, take it up with the Pope." As the mayor of New York City, Rudolph Giuliani was as controversial as he was determined to revitalize "the greatest city in the world." Never one to pull punches, he did things the way they had to be done, not the way everyone else thought they should be done. But during the chaotic aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, Giuliani's courageous actions and bold decisiveness propelled him from his place as the leader of a city under siege to the beloved Mayor of America. On that day and for many days afterward, he stood up and spoke with strength and compassion -- and for that he will be remembered by not only New Yorkers, but all Americans. Now, in his own words, readers can experience the wisdom, inspiration, and genuine "New Yawk" attitude that have brought Rudolph Giuliani from the tough streets of Brooklyn to the carnage of Ground Zero and into the annals of history.

Baseball has always had its share of colorful characters, and over the years they have expressed themselves in eminently quotable ways. In this treasury of more than 5,000 quotations, noted baseball writer and observer Paul Dickson has captured the flavor of the game, in the words of its most important participants and onlookers. They are all here—from Aaron (Estella, Hank's mother) to Zoldack ("Sad Sack" Sam), and everyone in between. From the players, sportswriters, and politicians, to noted personalities in other fields (a very diverse group), everyone has his or her say on our nation's pastime. Dickson skillfully selects and annotates each remark, presenting the good, the bad, and the ugly of baseball lore. Included are extended lessons in Stengelese, Reggiespeak, Earl Weaverisms, and famous announcers' home run calls (who can forget Mel Allen's classic "Going, going, gone!"?). These and thousands of other cheerful, pithy, and memorable voices from the past through the present day are all captured in Baseball's Greatest Quotations.

I've been a baseball fan, and a Chicago Cubs fan, for over 20 years. In that time, I've seen some thrilling wins, many crushing defeats, and lots of memorable moments. I've seen just about everything - except a championship. For all the grief I take for being a fan of America's most notorious losing sports team, the one thing that keeps me going is the belief that someday, I'll witness the final out that clinches that championship that has alluded the Cubs for over 100 years. 2015 wasn't supposed to be the year it happened. Sure, there were lots of great story lines as the season began. But most prognosticators thought they were at least a year away from being a serious contender. Instead, they took the fans on a wild ride that fell just short of a pennant. The season ended just like every other one I've witnessed - without a championship. Yet 2015 will always hold a special place in my mind. In this book, I chronicle the 2015 season through my eyes, while sharing my reflections from over two decades as a baseball fan. I'm not a famous journalist or celebrity. I'm just an average guy who enjoys watching the game. But I think that's what makes this book unique. I wrote it for every fan who still has a childlike passion for baseball while lamenting how it's become a big business; who tries to follow a big game while at work or a family event; and who keeps coming back year after year, no matter how many times their team breaks their heart, hoping this is the one year that things will be different. I wrote this book for all of you. I hope you enjoy it.
