From the FOREWORD by Dan G. Blazer, M.D., Ph.D. Professor of Psychiatry, Duke University Medical Center "Occasionally, a writer on psychology and biblical faith comes along who can work 'from the center.' J. Christopher Garrison is such a writer. Let me explain what I mean by working from the center. No person who is thoroughly committed to his or her religious faith can really put that faith aside and work with scientific objectivity in blending the essence of that faith with the subject matter of empirical science. Even if someone could, I doubt that the project would be of great interest. Such a person would not be someone I would define as working from the center. A person who can work from the center in blending psychology and biblical faith is a person who can work not so much from the center of extremes as from the center of their being-from their spirit if you will. This ability shows itself when one has opened his or her innermost being to the Spirit of God and his or her mind and reason to modern psychology and truly grasped as a result the principles and concepts of what psychology is really about. This is what Garrison has achieved. In Garrison's Psychology of the Spirit, psychology is not so much integrated as it is enriched. Reading the end product deepens one's faith and one's understanding. Such a psychology is not the mere providing of formulas for meeting daily life crises. It is instead the total unfolding and renewal of one's inner being."

Not illustrated. 1885 edition. Excerpt: ... other side wishes to set itself at liberty. In what way this disunion expresses itself if grace has effected it, is shown by the cry of the father of the child possessed with a dumb spirit (Mark ix. 24), iricneva), (Hor/dei, pov Tt} airiaria; and Joseph flying from the wife of Potiphar with the loss of his garment is a type of this better Ego, which withdraws itself from the seductive power of the nature-life, and leaves behind all that it has attached to itself. But we must here break off, that we may not stray over into the subject of the fifth division, where, considering the pneumatico-psychical life of the regenerate person, we shall return to this dualism, even then still unabolished, although overcome. These are facts of experience of which we speak, although they are the more mysterious the longer we reflect on them. This mystery of the Ego, which is distinguished from the spirit, and disunites itself in itself, is the mystery of human freedom. FKEEDOM. Sec. HI. Man as such is free: this is a thought which, thus expressed, nowhere occurs in Scripture; for DEGREES'SH is everywhere in the Old Testament (apart from Ps. lxxxviii. 5, where it implies relaxed, stretched forth, languishing; comp. 2 Kings xv. 5) the free man, and indeed the freed man (as distinguished from "ihj y !]> and other words, which usually denote the free-born man). 'pJ points to this or that obligation (e.g. the duty of defence, Deut. xxiv. 5) being released and made void. "nTI is the freedom from imprisonment, debt, and slavery, which the year of jubilee brought; and even in the New Testament, the external political legal meaning of ekevdepos is prominent (see, among other places, 6 avrov Sa>, Ovk Sxkov; comp. nc'Dab for JVK'Sn, Deut. xxi. 14). A text written in conversational style, designed to look at what the Bible says about psychological topics such as: personality, the mind/brain connection, states of consciousness, self-esteem, etc. Because psychology deals with the psychological/spiritual part of man, the Bible has much to say about it. Given that God created the mind and behavior (which is the basis of psychology) it only behooves us to study this realm of man that reflects God. Loaded with hundreds of Scripture references, the in-depth look at what the Bible says about thinking and behavior helps build a basis for studying psychology. The book begins with presuppositions, moves to a definition of what "integration" means to the author, and then provides insight for a Christian perspective of the psychological makeup of man. All of this is intended to set the foundation for Christian psychological study. The book then weighs in on certain psychological topics and runs those teachings through a "biblical grid."
