Excerpt from The Preservative Treatment of Fence Posts The durability of wood is a variable property, with certain kinds showing a marked resistance to decay, others moderate resistance whereas the majority of woods show little resistance. The sapwood of all seasoned woods is readily susceptible to decay, whereas in many woods the heartwood is relatively resistant. The greater durability of heartwood is primarily the result of certain chemical changes taking place in its development. The heartwood of some of the cedars and junipers con tains volatile oils and water soluble chemicals of high toxicity, pitchy or resin ous pines contain turpentine and pine oil, and soae of the oaks apparently contain tannin. These materials are more or less toxic to decay-producing fungi and there fore tend to retard their development. 'woods not resistant to decay can have their durability noticeably increased by impregnating them.with toxic preservatives which poison the food supply of the decay-producing fungi.
