Excerpt from The Epistles of St. Peter Verse 3 According to His great mercy. I am glad and grateful that the pregnant passage is prefaced by this word. The regenerated soul is just enveloped in great mercy. Now mercy implies sympathy. We cannot have mercy without sympathy. Without mercy we cannot have leniency; but leniency is only thin, pinched fruit compared with the fat, qcy fruit Of mercy. Without sympathy we may have giving, but unsympathetic giving is like the cold, outer threshold, while mercy is like a glowing hearthstone. Mercy implies sympathy. GO a step further. Sympathy suggests the choicest companionship, the rarest Of all fellow ships. Where there is true sympathy, there is the most exquisite companionship. If then, our God and Father enswathes us in great mercy, He visits in the sweetest fellowships. Therefore in the redeemed life there can be no loneliness, for in the Father's presence all possible loneliness is destroyed. The mercy which implies companionship accompanies me as a dynamic from my faintest breathing as a babe-christian on to the consummation when I shall have become a full-grown man in Christ. Excerpt from The Newly-Recovered Gospel of St. Peter: With a Full Account of the Same In the following pages I have tried to give an account of the most recent discovery in theological literature, the Gospel attributed to St. Peter, in such a form as to familiarise the mind of the non-technical reader with some of the results which are being arrived at by Biblical scholars, and which ought to be as encouraging to our faith as they are stimulating to the understanding. The Gospel of Peter, even in the imperfect form in which it has come down to us, is the breaking of a new seal, the opening of a fresh door, to those who are engaged in the problems presented by Biblical and Patristic criticism. Excerpt from Saint Peter and the First Years of Christianity I have been requested to introduce the present volume to the English-speaking public, and I gladly do so, in the persuasion that it will be welcomed on all sides as a valuable addition to our religious literature. In a previous work the gifted author gave us a most happy presentation of the Life of Our Lord. In this book he undertakes to describe the first beginnings of the (christian) Church. No subject, after the Gospel narrative, could be more grateful to the Christian reader. There is none which the thoughtful student approaches with a keener interest, for it is the opening of the great era Of human history, and of that higher form of life which the Whole civilized world gradually came to accept as its ideal, and to which it has never since ceased to pay homage. Unhappily, our sources of information regarding the early days Of Christianity are very imperfect, being almost entirely confined to the Acts of the Apostles. 62 But under the intelligent guidance of Abbe how much may be gathered even from so short and fragmentary a narrative With all the varied informa F 4 tion and cultivated tact of an historian, he adds to the clearness and consecutiveness of what we knew before.
