Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) is a surface treatment for the production of ceramic oxide coatings with great properties, such as high wear and corrosion resistance, on metal substrates, particularly aluminum and magnesium alloys. Formation of PEO coatings involves complex processes and mechanisms that are difficult to study. Currently, the PEO process is in a transition phase from research to commercial application, with a primary focus on the corrosion and wear protection of light alloys, and has recently generated interest as a promising surface treatment for biomedical applications. To justify the industrial application of PEO, a more systematic and in-depth study of the influence of various parameters on the process is required. The control of the PEO process to yield the desired morphology and microstructure for specific applications is a key requirement if the process is to be industrially applied. The aim of the research in this thesis is to study the influence of electrical parameters, so they can be optimized to produce coatings with enhanced properties mainly for tribological applications. Alumina coatings were deposited on 6061 aluminum alloy substrates in an alkaline silicate electrolyte using a unipolar pulsed DC current mode. The influence of processing conditions, mainly electrical parameters (applied frequency, duty cycle, and current density), on the formation, growth behaviour and properties of PEO coatings were investigated. Different characterization methods including scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry, microhardness testing, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and linear polarization resistance measurements were used to study the microstructure, morphology and properties of the coatings. The correlation between the stage of the PEO process and the properties of the coating has been shown. The voltage-time response was found to be important since it provided readily measurable and useful information about these stages. It was found that the microstructure, morphology, growth rate, phase distribution and composition of coatings could be changed by varying the electrical parameters. To some degree corrosion performance could be tailored by adjusting processing parameters.

Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO), a novel method for forming ceramic coatings on metals, has been researched extensively in recent times. By applying high voltage between dielectric thin films, a plasma micro-arc is induced through penetration of breakdown in film boiling layer. Such a method takes advantage of high processing time, low equipment requirement and advanced coating performance.Titanium alloys, Ti-6Al-4V and pure Titanium Grade 2, are two of most common Titanium alloys in daily use. Both of such Titanium alloys show great potential utilization in bio-medicinal application, especially in implants, for its excellent biocompatibility, high tensile strength, and high elastic modulus. However, in vivo environment is hazardous for metals and alloys. The body fluid is corrosive for metallic implants even for the chemically stable Titanium alloys. Thus methods have been used for surface modification and coating. Plasma electrolytic oxidation has shown its advantage on such demands.In this thesis, the in vitro corrosion experiment is done on the PEO treated Titanium alloys .The potential of PEO treated metals has few tests in vitro before for bio-medicinal usage. And also the potential dental and implants utilization of PEO treated Titanium alloys can be fulfilled by such analysis and qualified for in vivo test. The surface morphology is analyzed by various of methods in microscopy, electrochemical methods and XRD.

This book contains selected contributions on surface modification to improve the properties of solid materials. The surface properties are tailored either by functionalization, etching, or deposition of a thin coating. Functionalization is achieved by a brief treatment with non-equilibrium gaseous plasma containing suitable radicals that interact chemically with the material surface and thus enable the formation of rather stable functional groups. Etching is performed in order to modify the surface morphology. The etching parameters are selected in such a way that a rich morphology of the surfaces is achieved spontaneously on the sub-micrometer scale, without using masks. The combination of adequate surface morphology and functionalization of materials leads to superior surface properties which are particularly beneficial for the desired response upon incubation with biological matter. Alternatively, the materials are coated with a suitable thin film that is useful in various applications from food to aerospace industries.
