Excerpt from The Philosophy of Human Nature Much has been written in one place which would seem perhaps to belong to another head. Some things may appear irrelevant and unconnected, many valuable thoughts have, no doubt, been omitted, and some things said may be unprofitable. It may also be objected that there is a repetition of things or principles, and that there are unnecessary or too highly colored descriptions. To all which it is answered that the subjects treated of in these chapters are in their nature somewhat desultory and fugi tive, rather than systematic. That they are in some measure complicated with, instead of being independent of, and separated from, each other. Excerpt from The Philosophy of Human Nature, in Its Physical, Intellectual, and Moral Relations: With an Attempt to Demonstrate the Order of Providence in the Three-Fold Constitution of Our Being The following Work is an attempt to lay down the more important conditions of our being; to trace their various relations, the laws which regulate them, and their first origin. Consciousness has been considered with reference to its three grand elements, and every thing has been enumerated that was calculated to throw any light on its complicated and most interesting phenomena. It appeared self-evident that certain physical, moral, and intellectual states, were more conducive to virtue and happiness than others; that there was a close connexion between them, and that the whole, might be successively elucidated, beginning with the most elementary, and ending with the most complex. It likewise seemed that to execute this; to shew the mutual dependance of these states, and the necessity of improving each, to secure the joint perfection of all, might be of some service to the cause of humanity: that religion and morality might be promoted by demonstrating, independent of other sanctions and considerations, that there was a natural bond of obligation tending to the maintenance of our well-being, which could not be infringed without the certain contingency of misery, evil, and disease. Our position on earth our expectations here and hereafter, and the detail of our various duties, are fully adequate to occupy the attention of the most zealous inquirer. It has not been thought requisite to attempt any formal demonstration of the being of a God, but it was conceived imperatively so, to enlarge on his boundless wisdom and power, and to dwell upon every practicable illustration of his Divine Providence. Excerpt from The Philosophy of Human Nature (1812) Because of the general obscurity Of the author, it appears warranted to present a brief biography of Buchanan's not uneventful life. The most cir cumstantial account was written by his son, Joseph Rodes Buchanan (1814 and was published by Lewis Collins in his Historical Sketches of Kentucky (pp. 559-560; Maysville: L. Excerpt from On Human Nature: Essays (Partly Posthumous) In Ethics and Politics The following essays are drawn from the chapters entitled Zur Ethik and Zur Rechtslehre und Politik which are to be found both in Schopenhauer's Parerga and in his posthumous writings. As in my previous volumes, so also in this, I have omitted a few passages which appeared to me to be either antiquated or no longer of any general interest. For convenience' sake I have divided the original chapters into sections, which I have had to name; and I have also had to invent a title which should express their real scope. The reader will find that it is not so much Ethics and Politics that are here treated, as human nature itself in various aspects. What, exactly, is human nature? What makes humans different from animals (if there is any difference)? In this book, Howard Kainz presents a philosophical analysis of the various concepts of human nature and the many controversies that have surrounded them for centuries. He explores issues such as whether human beings are truly free, whether human instincts differ from animal instincts, and the realities of human maturity.
