Excerpt from The Percheron Horse LL my life I had taken a practical interest in the draft-horse, so that during a number of years' residence in France, terminating in 1865, I was not entirely unprepared to realize that in that country was to be found still, where it had existed for centuries, a race of this noble animal which possessed the requisite combination of qualities to render it the most perfect draft-horse in the world. Excerpt from Island Home Stud of Percheron Horses: Island Home Stock Farm, Grosse Ile, Wayne Co., Mich The exhibition of the American Percheron Horse Breeders' Association, held in Chicago in September last, was the crowning act in the drama, and, with former and corroborating evidence, placed Percherons so far in advance of all other draft horses that sensible men will have no further doubts regarding their merits, and the propriety of breeding to horses whose pedigrees are established by the records of the Percheron Stud Books of France and America. The show itself was greatly superior to anything ever attempted in this or the old country, so much so that Marquis de la Motte Rouge, Inspector General of the National Studs of France, appointed by the French government to act as a member of the jury of awards, remarked that France itself could not, at the present time, offer such an exhibit, but added, Give us another year to bring forward another generation of colts, and we will have a Concours worth visiting. Excerpt from Types, Breeds, and Market Classes of Horses, Vol. 2 The Percheron breed has proved very popular in America and may be said to be increasing in public favor. Percherons have crossed extremely well with native American mares, imparting quality and size and producing marketable horses. Due to their being clean-limbed, free from super uous hair, and of good disposition, they have always been great favorites with the American farmers, and users of heavy horses in cities show decided preference for grade Percherons. In the United States the number of recorded Percherons is greater than the number of recorded horses of all the other draft breeds com bined, which fact indicates that the breed is very popular. Excerpt from The New Book of the Horse The Arab, it may not be generally known, has stood still in his own country through out the long period of time during which anything definite has been known about him. He has undoubtedly the same elegant outline, the same beautiful appearance, and the same wonderful stamina for which he has always been noted. But in his native state he is no bigger or heavier than he was when he was first introduced into this country some thing like 300 years ago, and this is probably due to the fact that he is bred in countries which do not possess such land as is to be found in many parts of the United Kingdom. It may be urged that the Arab in his own country does not require the luxuriant grasses upon which English horses are reared, and to some extent that is true; but it may be pointed out that when Arabs, Barbs, and other Eastern sires were brought to this country with a view to improving our native breed, the size quickly increased, even in horses whose blood was almost entirely Eastern. The fact is that England, Ireland, and even parts of Scotland, are eminently suitable for horse - breeding, as are the blue grass plains of Ken tucky, the Percheron district of France, certain parts also of the Northern Coast of France, and many districts of Australia and New Zealand.
