Meet The Peach Tree Kids. There's Travis, Tray, Ripley, Livy and Bug and of course Cooper the big goofy bloodhound. In the third book of this fun children's book series, it seems Cooper has a very stinky adventure. Cooper likes to play tricks on people. He thinks its really funny. He likes to lay in the gutter and play dead. But this time something goes wrong. Cooper goes missing. Bug pulls a prank on Ned at breakfast and almost gets pounded. The twins, Travis and Tray, have a table licking contest. Ripley and Livy fall in the mud and look a lot like giant mud balls. The kids have lunch and then go to the store to but lots of candy, then to the park. On the way home, they decide to have a bike race. They don't notice that Cooper isn't with them. When Bug calls Cooper for dinner and he doesn't run to gobble up his food, Bug knows something is wrong. Cooper never misses a meal. The kids round up the whole neighborhood to hunt for Cooper. Oh no! It's getting dark! Where's Cooper? Bug is so worried, Cooper is his best friend. But it looks like they'll have to wait until sunrise to find out what has happened to Cooper.

This is a story of a sober kind, picturing life in a little town of Missouri, half a century ago. The principal incidents relate to a slave of mixed blood and her almost pure white son, whom she substitutes for her master's baby. The slave by birth grows up in wealth and luxury, but turns out a peculiarly mean scoundrel, and perpetrating a crime, meets with due justice. The science of fingerprints is practically illustrated in detecting the fraud. The title character is the village atheist, whose maxims doubtless express much of the author's own disillusion.
