The affordable PAC-3 system upgrade approach is based on innovative, joint consolidation and integration of existing industry and government assets. Through the integrated use of a network of geographically dispersed simulation, hardware in the loop, and test facilities, the PAC-3 missile design and performance is being analyzed and verified prior to first missile flight. This process begins with the thorough and rigorous testing of missile components. It then continues with the use of integrated simulations which is a key activity to verify and predict PATRIOT system performance with PAC-3 upgrades. The process is culminated with system level and flight testing conducted at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico. During the Gulf War, the PATRIOT air defense system made its now-famous battlefield debut against Tactical Ballistic Missiles (TBMs). Through a succession of improvements and modifications to refocus its mission on missile defense, PATRIOT helped defend coalition forces and Israeli territory from Iraqi Scud missile attacks. Despite this success, we realized that we needed to improve lethality (ability to destroy hard TBM warheads), radar detection range, defended area (footprint) and automatic recording of battle data. Improvements to the Engagement Control Station (ECS), radar, missile and launcher were planned to counter the TBM threat. Not only would a new state of the art Hit to Kill (HTK) technology advanced missile need to be developed, but it needed to be quickly and affordably integrated into the existing PATRIOT system.

The Patriot Air Defense System has been developed as a modular system with a high level of integrated software-driven functionality providing a broad range of inherent flexibility. The system has evolved from its initial, basic design which provided defense against the air breathing threat in complex countermeasure environments with a single Patriot missile type to the Patriot Advanced Capability 2 (PAC-2) which provides defense against a combination of the air breathing and tactical ballistic missile threats utilizing four missile types. The Patriot Air Defense System continues to evolve to the Patriot Advanced Capability 3 (PAC-3) configuration which incorporates radar and communication upgrades as well as the Lockheed Martin Vought Systems (LMVS) PAC-3 missile, a fifth missile type. As part of this capability, scheduled to be fielded in 1999, the Patriot Project Office (PPO) and the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization (BMDO) have contracted with Raytheon for the integration of the PAC-3 Missile Segment into the Patriot Air Defense System. The goal of this program is to achieve a balanced design that provides a fielded capability which maximizes the kill potential of the PAC-3 missile while maintaining overall performance of the Patriot System. The modular hardware design and flexible software architecture of the Patriot Air Defense System supports a system design which meets this goal.

2019 Missile Defense Review - January 2019 According to a senior administration official, a number of new technologies are highlighted in the report. The review looks at "the comprehensive environment the United States faces, and our allies and partners face. It does posture forces to be prepared for capabilities that currently exist and that we anticipate in the future." The report calls for major investments from both new technologies and existing systems. This is a very important and insightful report because many of the cost assessments for these technologies in the past, which concluded they were too expensive, are no longer applicable. Why buy a book you can download for free? We print this book so you don't have to. First you gotta find a good clean (legible) copy and make sure it's the latest version (not always easy). Some documents found on the web are missing some pages or the image quality is so poor, they are difficult to read. We look over each document carefully and replace poor quality images by going back to the original source document. We proof each document to make sure it's all there - including all changes. If you find a good copy, you could print it using a network printer you share with 100 other people (typically its either out of paper or toner). If it's just a 10-page document, no problem, but if it's 250-pages, you will need to punch 3 holes in all those pages and put it in a 3-ring binder. Takes at least an hour. It's much more cost-effective to just order the latest version from Amazon.com This book includes original commentary which is copyright material. Note that government documents are in the public domain. We print these large documents as a service so you don't have to. The U.S. Army is upgrading its PATRIOT Air Defense Missile System with hit-to-kill technology. The improvements of the launching station, enagement control station and the addition of a hit-to-kill guided missile interceptor are managed under the PATRIOT Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3) Missile Segment Program, now three years into it's development contract. PAC-3 uses an extremely accurate on-board seeker and guidance system and an agile attitude control system to achieve a direct hit by the interceptor on the target. The hit-to-kill concept utilizes kinetic energy as its primary kill mechanism to disintegrate incoming tactical ballistic missiles and their warheads. PAC-3 is being executed within the most advanced defense acquisition reform policies. It uses the Integrated Product and Process Development (IPPD) concept with government/contractor Integrated Product Teams (IPT). Streamlining of the establishment of the product baseline has been achieved by mutual agreement on design review scheduling and content. Extensive use of state-of-the-art modeling and simulation as well as exhaustive component testing are in combination the mechanism which is building confidence that the hit-to-kill technology is ready for production and deployment. This will provide substantial advancement in Army Theater Missile Defense (TMD) Active Defense force dominance.

A missile flight simulation is a computational tool that calculates the flight of a missile from launch until it engages the target. The simulation is based on mathematical models of the missile, target and environment. This book provides instruction for the preparation of these mathematical models to simulate the flight of a surface-to-air missile. The 2nd Edition of Missile Flight Simulation provides updated simulation processes using MATLAB(R) and Simulink(TM), while improving and clarifying previous content. The book may be used as a reference or as a textbook, although it is devoid of exercises. However, the reader is encouraged to perform the simulation of Charter 12 using MATLAB(R) and Simulink(TM), or a programming language such as FORTRAN (see Chapter 10). The book is not intended to be a missile flight engineering reference and does not contain every aspect of missile flight. It provides the appropriate content for simulating missile flight from launch to terminus only.

The theater missile defense mission is to protect U.S. forces deployed overseas and U.S. allies and friends from theater ballistic missile attacks. According to BMDO, an improved defense capability is urgently needed because of the increasing proliferation of theater ballistic missile weapon systems and technology to countries with the potential to threaten U.S. and allied theaters of operations. BMDO has established as its top priority a "core program" of improvements for TMD consisting of the Theater High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD), seabased lower tier, and PAC-3. During the past decade, there have been a series of upgrades to give the Patriot, which was originally designed to destroy aircraft, a capability against theater ballistic missiles. In July 1988, Patriot was modified to give it an initial ballistic missile defense capability, called PAC-1. During Operation Desert Storm in 1991, a new version of the Patriot interceptor, called PAC-2, was deployed to defend against Iraqi Scud missiles. The Army also began the Guidance Enhancement Missile (GEM) program to make interim engineering improvements to the Patriot interceptor. Army plans call for 345 GEM interceptors, with initial delivery scheduled in 1995. (MM).

The Patriot and the Navy Area ballistic missile defense systems are expected to provide the lower tier of defense in an overall missile defense strategy, which includes the Army's Theater High Altitude Area Defense and Navy Theater Wide systems. These latter systems are designed to intercept targets at much higher altitudes (above the atmosphere) than the Patriot missile. Engineering and manufacturing development of the Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3) missile was approved in May 1994. The original schedule called for initial fielding of the missile in 1998 and missile procurement through 2002. Several delays have occurred since that time. As of March 2000, initial fielding of the PAC-3 missile was planned for 2001, and missile procurement was planned through 2010. With the exception of the missile, all PAC-3 components are upgrades to existing Patriot components. The PAC-3 missile is based on the Extended Range Interceptor Technology program, in which the Department of Defense (DOD) explored the feasibility of developing a hit-to-kill missile. Under this program, the extended range missile was developed in a laboratory environment, prototype missiles were fabricated, and the missiles successfully intercepted three of four test targets. The Ballistic Missile Defense Organization, a DOD agency responsible for missile defense programs, provides overall management of the PAC-3 program, including its funding. The Army's Program Executive Office for Air and Missile Defense and the Patriot Project Office provide day-to-day management of the program.
