During all of last year the most important line of investigation was the problem of The Physical Basis of Dullness. Of the nine tests and measurements used regularly in this work only sight and hearing came under the head Of sensory. Therefore, while the department employs (especially in the diagnosis of peculiar cases) most of the sensory tests which are adapted to use with children, statistical work has been done in these two lines only. To eliminate as far as possible local or peculiar conditions the schools in which this work was carried on were carefully selected as to good light, good sanitary condition of building, healthful neighborhood, and also with a view to obtaining as high a percentage as possible of children of American-born parents, thus securing normal American children.
