Excerpt from The Normal School Bulletin, Vol. 10: October 1, 1904 The other educational influences that are at work durin g at least four-fifths of the waking hours of the child are the father and mother in the home, the natural surroundings and the community life, with its many industrial, commer cial, political, social, and religious phases. Tparents and guardians, not teachers, are responsible for the children's companionship out of school; responsible for the manner in which they spend their time, for what they read, the games they play, and the whole warp and woof of the children's physical, mental, and moral life when not in the school room. The fortuitous education of natural environment and social experience is indirect but powerful. The home and school, the largest factors in the child's education, should certainly co-operate in molding all other influences. In the meantime, a plan was proposed for a temporary school building, and in less than sixty days a building was completed containing fourteen rooms, and the Normal School began its wonted duties in this, its temporary home. What, after all, is the useful study in our schools? What do men find to be the useful thing in their lives? The most natural answer to this question is that the useful things are those that en able us to meet effectively the conditions of life, - or, to use a phrase that is perfectly clear to us all, the things that help us in getting a living. The vast majority of men and women in this world measure all value by this standard for most of us are, to use the expressive slang of the day, up against this problem, and up against it so hard and so constantly that we interpret everything in the greatly foreshortened perspective of immediate necessity. Most of us in this room are confronting this problem of making a living. At any rate, I am confronting it, and consequently I may lay claim to some of the authority that comes from experience.
