Excerpt from The Naval Chronicle, Vol. 4: From July to January, 1801 IT is said to have been remarked by a late cele brated critic and writer, Dr. Samuel Johnson, that if an Author took care to introduce his book by an elegant and entertaining Preface, it was not, nine teen times in twenty, of much consequence to him how the body of the work was executed - Although there may be some truth in this observation with re spect to literary works in general, yet the Editor of a periodical publication is totally precluded from this advantage. On the other hand, he claims one which is more useful to him perhaps, for he considers him self in general answerable only for a careful arrange ment, and the selection of such materials as he thinks may prove most interesting, for the merit of which he is principally indebted to the labours of his friends, and not his own. The Naval Chronicle, published in 40 volumes between 1799 and 1818, is a key source for British maritime and military history. This reissue is the first complete printed reproduction of what was the most influential maritime publication of its day. The subjects covered range from accounts of battles and lists of ships to notices of promotions and marriages, courts martial and deaths, and biographies, poetry and letters. Each volume also contains engravings and charts relating to naval engagements and important harbours around the world. Volume 9, published in 1803 at the end of the Peace of Amiens, includes accounts of Parliamentary discussions concerning the forthcoming war and the official declaration of war which lists Britain's grievances with France and Holland. It also contains proclamations designed to increase manpower in the Navy, a detailed article describing the health of Greenwich pensioners, and a biography of James Cook.

Volume 14 of the Naval Chronicle includes the first reports of the Battle of Trafalgar and the death of Nelson.

Volume 23 of the Naval Chronicle (1810) focuses on the unsuccessful Walcheren Campaign of 1809 and the capture of Guadeloupe.

Volume 4 of the Naval Chronicle contains vivid contemporary reports of British maritime activities in 1800, and historical analyses.

Volume 15 of the Naval Chronicle contains the continuation of the biography of Lord Nelson and further reports of Trafalgar.

Contains a general and biographical history of the Royal Navy of the United Kingdom, with a variety of original papers on nautical subjects, under the guidance of several literary and professional men.
