Excerpt from The Nature of Christ's Presence in the Eucharist, or the True Doctrine of the Real Presence Vindicated in Opposition to the Fictitious Real Presence, Vol. 2: Asserted by Archdeacon Denison, Mr. (Late Archdeacon) Wilberforce, and Dr. Pusey For instance, in a prayer at the conclusion of the Service, those who drew it up evidently intended to intimate that the communication of the Body and Blood of Christ is limited to those who have duly received the holy mysteries. For the words are, We thank thee, for that thou dost vouchsafe to feed us, who have duly received these holy mysteries, with the spiritual food of the most precious body and blood Of thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ. And what renders this pas sage much more significant is the fact (which I shall presently notice more particularly), that it was altered to the expressions now found in it from words that might seem to imply that all received the Body and Blood of Christ. But the most significant evidence derivable from the Com munion Service on this subject, is, I think, to be found in the alterations made from the first Liturgy of 1549 in the revision Of 1552, and continued in subsequent revisions to which therefore I shall now proceed to direct the attention of the reader. It will be found that in the Second prayer-book of Edw. VI. (that of and the subsequent ones, all those expressions in the first prayer-book, published in 1549, which might seem to indicate, that the presence Of the Body and Blood of Christ was to be looked for in the consecrated elements, or as so present that all the communicants indiscriminately partook of that Body and Blood, are carefully expunged or altered. Winner of a first-place award for popular presentation of the faith and second-place in pastoral ministry, catechetical resource from the Catholic Media Association. Many Catholics don’t believe that Jesus is really present in the Eucharist. Rather, they see the bread and wine of Holy Communion as mere symbols of Christ’s body and blood. Is that disbelief just a misunderstanding or is it a blatant rejection of one of the central beliefs of the faith? In Real Presence, University of Notre Dame theologian Timothy P. O’Malley clears up the confusion and shows you how to learn to love God and neighbor through a deeper understanding of the doctrine of real presence. A 2019 study by the Pew Research Center found that almost seventy percent of Catholics don’t believe that Jesus is really present in the Eucharist. O’Malley offers a concise introduction to Catholic teaching on real presence and transubstantiation through a biblical, theological, and spiritual account of these doctrines from the early Church to today. He also explores how real presence enables us to see the vulnerability of human life and the dignity of all flesh and blood. O’Malley leads you to a deeper understanding and renewed faith in Catholic teaching about transubstantiation and real presence by helping you learn how the doctrine of real presence is rooted in divine revelation and how the Church’s teaching regarding transubstantiation is spiritually fruitful for the believer today; how to make your own the doctrine of real presence by worshipping Christ in the Eucharist and therefore making a real assent to real presence; how the Eucharist, although not the exclusive presence of Christ in the Church’s liturgy and mission, is crucial in growing our capacity for recognizing those other presences; and the important relationship between Eucharistic communion and adoration.

The Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist by Vijay Martis This comprehensive guide explores the doctrine of the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, a foundational tenet of Catholic theology. The book delves into the scriptural, historical, theological, and liturgical aspects of this doctrine, highlighting its significance in Catholic faith and practice. Key Highlights: - Scriptural Foundations: The book examines the biblical accounts of the Last Supper and Jesus' teachings on the Eucharist, particularly in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, to establish the scriptural basis for the Real Presence. It also draws on St. Paul's writings, especially in 1 Corinthians, to underscore the real nature of Christ's presence in the Eucharist. - Historical Development: The doctrine's historical evolution is chronicled, from early Christian writers like St. Ignatius of Antioch and St. Justin Martyr to the systematic explanations of St. Thomas Aquinas and the reaffirmations at the Council of Trent. This historical context emphasizes the continuous tradition that supports the Real Presence. - Theological and Liturgical Aspects: The concept of transubstantiation is explained, detailing how the bread and wine become the actual body and blood of Jesus Christ during the Mass. The role of the priest and the sacramental words are highlighted, along with the elements of the Eucharistic liturgy, such as the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. - Spiritual Implications and Devotions: The Eucharist is shown to be a source of spiritual nourishment, fostering union with Christ and contributing to the sanctification of the faithful. Various devotions like Eucharistic Adoration, processions, and perpetual adoration are discussed, reflecting the deep reverence and adoration that Catholics have for the Real Presence. This book is essential for: - Catholics seeking to deepen their understanding of the Eucharist and its central role in their faith. - Theologians interested in the historical and scriptural foundations of Catholic doctrine. - Anyone looking to explore the spiritual implications and devotional practices surrounding the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. By combining historical, theological, and liturgical insights, this book offers a profound exploration of the Real Presence, enriching the reader's understanding and reverence for this sacred sacrament.

Eucharist: Our sacrament of unity--that we never stop discussing and debating. Nor should we! Nathan Mitchells earlier book Cult and Controversy demonstrated the breadth of his scholarship on the history of Eucharistic practice and piety in the Church. In this expanded edition of Real Presence, Dr. Mitchell brings that scholarship to bear on the contemporary dialogue about the Eucharist. What he says is vital to Sunday practice and parish life. Teachers, preachers, catechists, and students especially will find help in Mitchells insights into the Catechism of the Catholic Church and its teachings on the Eucharist; into the ways that contemporary biblical scholarship opens up our understanding of Jesus and the Eucharist; into those two wonderful words that have again and again challenged the Church to go ever deeper--real presence; and into the theologies of the Eucharist coming from contemporary Europeans such as Jean-Luc Marion, Herbert McCabe, and Catherine Pickstock. This new and expanded edition also includes Nathan Mitchells essay 'Eucharist in the Work of Some Contemporary European Theologians' and an expanded commentary on Eucharist in Luke's Gospel.Nathan Mitchell holds a doctorate in liturgical studies from the University of Notre Dame and is associate director for research at the Notre Dame Center for Pastoral Liturgy. The Eucharist: Mystery of Presence, Sacrifice, and Communion explores the three ends of the Sacrament of Sacraments: God’s true presence, His redemptive sacrifice, and spiritual nourishment through communion with Him. In this follow-up to his groundbreaking work, Faith Comes From What Is Heard, Lawrence Feingold constructs a biblical vision of the Eucharist from its prefigurement in the Old Testament to its fulfillment in the New and presents the Eucharistic theology of the Church Fathers, St. Thomas Aquinas, and magisterial teaching from centuries past through today. The Eucharist is a masterful text, both challenging and spiritually rich, that comprehensively examines the unspeakable mystery that is the Eucharist.
