Cargo Handling and the Modern Port covers various concerns in the handling of goods in a contemporary port. The book also details the functions of ports, along with the impact of the silent revolutions that took place in the major ports around the world. The text first covers the port itself, such as its functions, the types of port managements, and administration. Next, the book discusses the basics of operating a port, and then proceeds to tackling port labor. Chapter 4 details the various changes that took place in the major ports throughout the world after 1945. The next series of chapters deals with various concerns in cargo, such as unit load, containers, and bulk cargos. The last chapter of the text discusses the ports of the future. The book will be of great use to individuals involved in logistics, forwarding, and ship transportation industries.

The Efficient Port, follows up on the book, Cargo Handling and the Modern Port. It suggests ways to improve cargo handling, shipping, and the management and design of ports. It also tries to predict what the future port will be like, given current revolutionary changes. The book discusses the port's history, current function and design, and changes over the years. It also reviews the port's many important components: the berth, the ship, the laborers, and the cargo. The book recommends improvements to mechanization and general cargo work, as well as to the management and administration of ports; it also discusses what ports will be like in the future and the problems they may face. This book will appeal to port authorities, coastguards, shipping lines, logistics and cargo companies, naval architects, and other professionals whose livelihood centers on the port, its many activities and functions, and its management.

This study applies modern economic principles to the operations of modern port facilities, ranging from new ports in the planning stages for developing nations to established American and European ports retrofitted to handle container cargos and larger vessels. It investigates all the links in the chain of port services - the transfer of goods between land and sea transportation - and offers recommendations for strengthening the weaker links. Port Economics covers the historical development of port organization and technology, production measures, short- and long-term cost functions, pricing, and investment. The capital input by the port authorities and the labor input by the cargo-handling companies are discussed, and the authors consider the utility of merging port and stevedoring charges. Queuing processes are adjusted to fit the special circumstances of port traffic, allowing for the measurement of such variables as throughput and congestion costs. The theory developed for individual ports is extended to national port systems over time. Throughout the book, elements of the theory are tested empirically against data from ports in the United States, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. The final chapter is a large-scale case-study of the Nigerian port system, which serves to test the whole of the authors' economic theory, including such concepts developed in the later chapters as dynamic port system investment and optimal port charges. Jan Owen Jansson is Chief Economist of the Swedish National Road and Traffic Research Institute. Dan Shneerson is Senior Lecturer in Economics at the University of Haifa. Their book is the eighth in MIT Press Transportation Studies Series, edited by Marvin L. Manheim.
