This issue of The Ministry of the Word contains the first eight of the sixteen messages given during the fall 2023 term of the full-time training in Anaheim, California. The general subject of this series of messages is “The Crucial Points of the Truth in Paul’s Epistles—First Corinthians.”

Our sufficiency is from God, who has made us sufficient as ministers of a new covenant, ministers not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. (2 Corinthians 3:5-6) Second Corinthians may be considered as an autobiography of the Apostle Paul. In it we see a portrait of a person who lived in the Spirit. For us to enjoy and experience Christ in a rich way we must be persons in the Spirit as symbolized by ten aspects in 2 Corinthians—captives, letters, mirrors, vessels, ambassadors, co-workers, a temple, a virgin, lovers of the church, and tasters of Christ. It is by all of these aspects that we can be thoroughly wrought by God and with God and be constituted the ministers of the new covenant for the building up of the church.

God's salvation is truly wonderful! God desires not only to save us from eternal perdition, but also to grow in us, transform us, and eventually glorify us that we would be His glorious expression for eternity. In order for us to fully enjoy His marvelous salvation, we must pass through many spiritual experiences and practical dealings, including purifying our heart, confessing our sins, being enlightened by God, consecrating ourselves to God, living by our conscience, and learning to serve God by His power and not our own. About the Theology Journal This present publication comprises Volume 2 No. 1 of Semănătorul (The Sower): The Emanuel Journal of Ministry and Biblical Research. It incorporates the Proceedings of the Bi-Annual International Theological Conferences of the Department of Theology held in Emanuel University, Oradea, April and November 2017. The titles of the Conference were: “The Theology of the Cross,” and, “The Doctrine of Justification and Related Themes.” The papers presented here include those given in person by various colleagues of the Emanuel Faculty; others via a Skype call or by invitation. The International Conferences held by the Department of Theology were made possible through the commitment of members of the Emanuel faculty, the collaboration of Emanuel University Press, the Emanuel “Ethics and Society” Research Centre, and the contribution of distinguished colleagues from the Hungarian Baptist Academy, Budapest, The Irish Baptist College, UK and the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort Worth, Texas. The Journal includes a range of papers on the death of Christ and the truth of justification by faith. The Christ hymn (Phil 2:5–11) is here, as is the focus upon the invitation in John 6 to “eat the flesh of the Son of God” and to “drink his blood.” Also the whole theology of the cross in the Fourth Gospel is considered. Again the concept of redemption in all the Gospels is discussed, as is a paper on the Holy Spirit and the death of Christ from a Pauline perspective. The theme of the cross in the sermons of Philip Doddridge is highlighted, plus two articles on Luther’s doctrine of justification and the treatment of this theme by the Reformer in the Epistle of James. These articles include a range of affirmations on crucial doctrines and theological themes which must not be lost or neglected. One remembers the exhortation of 2 Tim 2:1–2 to hold to truths that are fundamental and to entrust them “to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.” Hamilton Moore, Editor.

The speaking concerning the golden lampstand in the Bible is in three stages: The first stage is the golden lampstand, the second stage is the golden lampstand with the olive oil (the Holy Spirit), and the third stage is the singular lampstand becoming the plural lampstands—one lampstand becoming many lampstands. This is very meaningful. In Exodus 25, the emphasis of the lampstand is on Christ; in Zechariah 4, the emphasis is on the Holy Spirit; and in Revelation 1, the emphasis is on the churches. All three passages mention the lampstand, but in the first passage Christ is emphasized, in the second passage the Holy Spirit is emphasized, and in the third passage the churches are brought forth.
