Excerpt from The Mayor's Message, With Accompanying Documents, to the Municipal Assembly of the City of Saint Louis, at Its Session, May, 1887 The report of this department shows that during the year brick buildings were erected at a valuation of and 519 frame buildings at a valuation of and addi tions and alterations to buildings already erected have been made at a valuation of The gross sum expended dur ing the year in building improvements as given by this depart ment was The amount of money received for building permits during the year was The figures here presented are as given by owners, architects and contractors when taking out permits, and, as the commissioner states in his report, the estimates given are considerably lower, and in many instances very much lower than the actual cost of the work. It follows that they do not represent the true value of improvements. It is owing to this fact that the building statistics of St. Louis do not compare favorably with those of other cities. The commissioner says that his present force of inspectors, four in number, is inadequate to properly discharge the duties pertaining to their 06008 and asks for an increase to a sufficient number to thoroughly inspect all buildings in course of erection as well as those deemed unsafe.
