“One of the country’s most talented young writers.” — The Globe and Mail In a near-future Toronto buffeted by environmental chaos and unfettered development, an unsettling new lifeform begins to grow beneath the surface, feeding off the past. The Marigold, a gleaming Toronto condo tower, sits a half-empty promise: a stack of scuffed rental suites and undelivered amenities that crumbles around its residents as a mysterious sludge spreads slowly through it. Public health inspector Cathy Jin investigates this toxic mold as it infests the city’s infrastructure, rotting it from within, while Sam “Soda” Dalipagic stumbles onto a dangerous cache of data while cruising the streets in his Camry, waiting for his next rideshare alert. On the outskirts of downtown, 13-year-old Henrietta Brakes chases a friend deep underground after he’s snatched into a sinkhole by a creature from below. All the while, construction of the city’s newest luxury tower, Marigold II, has stalled. Stanley Marigold, the struggling son of the legendary developer behind this project, decides he must tap into a hidden reserve of old power to make his dream a reality — one with a human cost. Weaving together disparate storylines and tapping into the realms of body horror, urban dystopia, and ecofiction, The Marigold explores the precarity of community and the fragile designs that bind us together.

In the seventeenth century, a young Roman woman secretly poses in a marigold chemise for her best friend for a series of sensuous paintings. The young woman artist longs for recognition as a painter, but the times dictate that she can only be an assistant for her father, who is commissioned to paint religious icons for the church. The garment and the paintings pass through generations of Italian families to the present day. Intrigue, betrayal, murder, and passion follow the marigold chemise and the paintings from Rome, Florence, New York, back to Rome, and finally, Corsica. Along the way, the marigold chemise becomes the inspiration for a wildly successful lingerie company, flourishing in the Roman studio on Via Margutta, where the paintings were originally created. 1

Marigold presents the first rigorously documented, in-depth story of one of the Vietnam War's last great mysteries: the secret peace initiative, codenamed "Marigold," that sought to end the war in 1966. The initiative failed, the war dragged on for another seven years, and this episode sank into history as an unresolved controversy. Antiwar critics claimed President Johnson had bungled (or, worse, deliberately sabotaged) a breakthrough by bombing Hanoi on the eve of a planned secret U.S.-North Vietnamese encounter in Poland. Yet, LBJ and top aides angrily insisted that Poland never had authority to arrange direct talks and Hanoi was not ready to negotiate. This book uses new evidence from long hidden communist sources to show that, in fact, Poland was authorized by Hanoi to open direct contacts and that Hanoi had committed to entering talks with Washington. It reveals LBJ's personal role in bombing Hanoi as he utterly disregarded the pleas of both the Polish and his own senior advisors. The historical implications of missing this opportunity are immense: Marigold might have ended the war years earlier, saving thousands of lives, and dramatically changed U.S. political history.

Beautiful imagery and wordplay combine to create this defining collection of poetry from Rita Durrant. Dancing to the Marigold Mazurka celebrates the rich experiences of life in all its facets. Durrant explores the terror of a biopsy, the simple joy of antique shopping on a lazy Sunday afternoon, a bittersweet wartime wedding of 1945, and even the loving routine of preparing a family Thanksgiving feast. Melodic phrases produce a whimsical flavor. In Uncle Lou, a child awaits the ching-ching of sleigh bells while the blue waters echo like the gentle ting-ting-ting of silver wind chimes at The Garden of Chambrel. But it is Durrants flair for description that truly captures the simple aspects of our world. In Joy and Sorrow she describes a pheasant with his teal necklace, white circlet and golden body gleaming. The sunset becomes a mantle of amethyst mist deepened to purple in Romance at Sunset, and fire flickers on the hearth, an iron kettle swings, candlelight reflects in ruffled windows, and mulled cider, spiked with spirits, beckons in Tour of the Parry Mansion, New Hope. Immerse yourself in the little treasures of life with Dancing to the Marigold Mazurka.
