The Lord Our Righteousness

"Whoever is acquainted with . . . the propensity of his own heart . . . must acknowledge that self-righteousness is the last idol that is rooted out of the heart . . . it is natural for us all to have recourse to a covenant of works, for our everlasting salvation." This sermon explores the doctrine of the righteousness of Jesus Christ being imputed to mankind, taken from the text of Jeremiah 23:6. It explains who the Lord is and how He is man's righteousness. The great question to be made known is, “How shall man be just with God? How can I come before the Lord in innocence?” and I wish, if the Lord will, to make you understand: I. That you must have perfect righteousness—or you will not be saved. II. That you have no righteousness of your own of any sort, and therefore by yourself you cannot be saved. III. That the Lord Himself must be your Righteousness, and so you shall be saved.
