Both psychoanalysis and neurology have left equally prominent marks on the history of the twentieth century, yet they have been interpreted in vastly different ways. The two fields appear to manifest an insurmountable Cartesian dualism, one representing a psychological, the other a somatic approach to understanding personhood and subjectivity. The essential insight is that taking a perspective requires constructing an analogy between one's own personal knowledge and experience and that of the perspective taking target.
